Album Notes
The "Caffe' Espresso - Made In Italy" project by the Italian guitarist Marco Vienna is a very original acoustic jazz CD. An instrumental rendition of 12 beatiful Italian songs (from the repertoire of Bruno Martino, Gorni Kramer, Fabio Concato, Ennio Morricone, Piero Umiliani and others) loosely played in the style of Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club De France, but with a more modern and "Mediterranean" mood. Although being an expert in all the swing related styles, including Gypsy of course, in this record Marco Vienna isn't trying to sound exactly like a "traditional" Gypsy Jazz guitarist, goin' on the usual licks and cliches often associated with this style but his goal is exploring new sounds and new repertoires. This CD, in spite of containing hot guitar and other instruments solos, is not made to impress other musicians but just to let you enjoy good music.
Swing, pompe Manouche, great Selmer guitar solos, but also a lot of different rhythms... gypsy-bossa, ballads, boleros... and many great different players... the leader Marco Vienna on acoustic and electric guitars and mandolin, Giordano Pietroni and Andrea Taravelli on bass, Stefano Nanni on accordion, Gaspare Tirincanti on clarinet, Angelo Adamo on chromatic harmonica, Stefano Serafini on trumpet, Alessandro Fariselli on sax, Federico Tassani on trombone, Luca Florian on misc. percussions, Luca Nanni on snare drum.
A completely original project, nearly one hour of surprising, melodic, sometime romantic but always very feel-good music and some very beatiful unknow tunes.
You won't find here another rendition of "Minor Swing" and "Nuages" but a set of hardly-ever-heard-before great songs played with Django and Gypsy/Swing/Jazz tinge.
Also available from Marco Vienna a "Chord Book + play-along rhythm tracks CD" for players willing to learn the songs contained in the CD ( All the musicians are warmly invited to include Italian songs in their repertoire!

Dino Plasmati,

Marco Vienna is very glad to quote the words Mary Hooncoop wrote him after listening the CD:

"I think your CD is fantastic! I have listened to it many times now and every time I think it’s better. The choice of songs and the great mixture of all instruments makes the CD a jewell. I hope you believe me when I say your CD will be in my top-20 for quite a while. CD’s like yours make me feel much better… thank you again for making such good music… I hope to see you play live someday (perhaps in Samois?)"

(Mary Hooncoop was the Rosenberg Trio Manager, The Netherlands, and passed away in 2004. She was one of the most important, respected and beloved person amongst the European Gypsy Jazz community, and her passing was a huge loss for everybody.)

Simply superb! Do your soul a favor - get this CD!
There is not one selection on this CD that isn't worth a listen - again and again and again. Tempo Italiano is a weekly 6-hour Italian radio program that airs here in Easton, PA. We purchased Cafe' Espresso to add to our collection of over 1,000 CDs that we use for our program every Sunday. The songs on Cafe' Espresso have become part of each week's show and our listeners are now requesting the selections as well. Absolutely one of the very best new CDs in our collection.

It's all about the swing on Caffè Espresso - Made In Italy.
This guy can swing! And that’s what it’s all about with this CD. One word you hear associated often with jazz and very often with gypsy jazz guitar players is virtuoso. At times it gets to the point of hearing players more for their chops than for their feel. For their swing. Perhaps worse, for many guitar players, it’s more important to be considered a virtuoso than to play with true style. Marco Vienna (and his fine group of musicians) swings like crazy on this CD. You snap your fingers, you tap your feet and you hum along. Marco has given us the gift of Italian songs – EVERY one on this CD is a gem – presented in fun, hip and clever arrangements. His guitar playing style runs the gamut from traditional gypsy jazz to cool jazz to mellow blues. What’s even better, if you ARE looking for a virtuoso, or someone who can play like a virtuoso, you also happen have one here. Besides having style aplenty, his licks on this CD are as hot as they come. He can easily hold his own with some of the best players out there. Highest recommendation for Caffè Espresso - Made In Italy. Bravo Marco!

Invigorating and not too sweet
There are many cafe's in Italy where one may with perfect composure sit with a newspaper and some oranges, face the sun-spangled sea, and let an hour pass without ruffle or regret. The addition of music to such a circumstance might be jarring, -- but not if it's music like this! If Marco Vienna and his companions were to show up at your cafe', pull out their instruments, you'd look up from your paper, smile wanly, and hope that they'd provide some suitably inoffensive background music. But then you'd realize after a few bars of "Donna" that their musicianship is deft, intelligent, snappy, -- and you'd put the newspaper down, listen more carefully, and really begin enjoying yourself. Even if you don't know these melodies, which are mostly from Italy's 1950's and 60's, you'd tap your foot, be sent on reveries, be invigorated by bossa and bolero rhythms, and be completely charmed by the improvisations of guitars, flutes, harmonicas, trombones, accordions, trumpets -- a whole banquette of flavors and textures delivered adeptly to your table. This is a recording that is happy, alert, sharp and aware. Warmly recommended.

faithful to the spirit of django
This is a lovely cd, faithful to the spirit and sensibility of Django Reinhardt but very much its own music. The melodies are sweet and thoughtful and the musicianship is quite high.

Traditional Italian music with a gypsy feel is the essence of this CD. Marco plays with heartfelt passion and the ambience of the music puts the listener in a seaside caffe on the adriatic with his brilliant ensemble. What makes this music different is the way Marco Vienna is able to expertly combine styles while evoking warmth without sentimentality and letting the melodies guide the music. A pleasure to listen to.

The feeling is very nice
Though not a real gypsy jazz album, this is very nice music. The melodies are sometimes beautiful, sometimes fleeting.I like the ballads in particular.I love the tone color of his mandolin! Pure and nostalgic!
