Album Notes
Renowned jazz keyboardist, composer and producer, MARCUS JOHNSON continues his quest to “create a jazz lifestyle movement for the people” with the introduction of the FLO CD series (For the Love Of). By simultaneously releasing a collection of three CDs - FLO: Standards, FLO: Chill and FLO: Romance, this innovative and creative approach will allow multiple audiences to enjoy their individual or collective FLO. The novel concept is in line with Johnson’s artistic musical journey, reflects his maverick spirit and solidifies his commitment to the business of music 2.0. His vision is to brand FLO (For the Love of) to every community of people for every walk of life.

FLO: Standards features Johnson’s smooth, melodic and intricate interpretation of jazz master Cannonball Adderley’s Moanin’ along with a masterful rendition of the classic, “My Funny Valentine”. He is also joined on Standards with compelling performances by jazz keyboardists Bobby Lyle, Michael Price and drummer Lenny Robinson. This combination of dynamic performances lifts Standards to glory for any jazz lover.

FLO: Chill , is a mixture of laid back cool jazz tracks coupled with sexy dance tracks and a leaning of R&B and hip-hop. It will remind you of walking into the swankest London Lounge. With this production, Johnson continues his commitment to independent thought in music by giving several young producers free reign to give him music to play over that produced a perfect blend of jazzy keyboards with racy, dynamic tracks – ‘ Straight chillin’. Chill also opens with the grooves of “Plush” from Johnson’s highly touted Urban Groove CD (2001).

FLO: Romance, a smoothed out mix of sultry R&B vocals along with Johnson’s fluid performance on keys, gives homage to romance with the crooning of R&B vocalists Frank McComb , Keith Adler, and Stoney Ellis. Noted songstress Alyson Williams joins this grouping with her love song, “Soft and Warm” and Johnson’s accompaniment with former label mate, YahZarah, on “My Funny Valentine” is stellar.

Johnson, Chairman and CEO of Three Keys Music and Studio 8121, and founder of FLOTM Brands, juggles running a successful business, creating musical masterpieces and dedicating himself to community service seamlessly. A classic over-achiever, Johnson seems to be the embodiment of the motto, “Do it big or don’t do it at all.” His live performances are electrifying. He has captured the ability to give people what they want. He has an uncanny knack of drawing audiences into his person, his music and his philosophy. He is confident and unrelenting. These qualities are exceptional tools in the entrepreneurial world of independent thinking which Marcus Johnson continues to master.

Johnson has released more than 10 CDs, all charting at Top 20 or more on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Charts. Over his 15 year career as a musician, his music has been widely lauded by jazz critics and aficionados. From his first

independent release Lessons in Love (1997) to his latest Phoenix (2007) and In Concert For A Cause (2008), Marcus Johnson has generated loyal fans from around the world and garnered respect from his peers in the industry.

However, the most important and most meaningful to him as a musician , performer and entrepreneur are the people – the masses of folk that love his music and the masses of folk who are growing to know him everyday. They are his focus and his guiding light to enable him to strive and perfect his FLO “For the Love Of.”

Johnson was born in Ohio and raised in Washington, DC by his mother, a classical pianist and his father, who exposed him to the funk. He witnessed his first live show – Earth, Wind & Fire – with his father and the musical chariot was in motion. His stepfather bought his first keyboard and along with private lessons from an Aunt and direction from his high school music director, a star was born.

Johnson is a graduate of Howard University (Bachelor of Music and Georgetown University, accomplishing a daunting feat for anyone else, a JD and MBA . He independently produced his first musical recording, went on to form his first company, Marimelj Entertainment Group, LLC, joined forces with BET head Bob Johnson who invested in Marcus’ dream. From that dream came Three Keys Music, Studio 8121 and two music publishing companies. FLO brands, LLC comes from Marcus’ desire to fill the void of adult music. In 2004, when asked by Billboard’s Gail Mitchell, “What do you want people to say about you in 5 years?” Johnson replied, “That I took a chance on Adult Music and Won!”. FLO Brands and the FLO Series is the manifestation of that goal. There will be many more CD Series as well as other brands to come.

The famous line from a poem by Robert Frost … “The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep and miles to go before I sleep…” is the perfect metaphor and embodies the person of Marcus Johnson, the man, the leader, the musician, and the visionary.

FLO: “For the Love of…” Life and great music. Forever!

Shalom - By Matthew Shell
This song by pianist and composer Matthew Shell starts out with a scenery of some sort. Maybe a café in Copenhagen during midsummertime when the heat is on and the time of the day is closing in on the evening of this particular day. You sit there with some good friends arguing about the troubles of the world, joking and sipping on that cold beer. Some cool funky guys are playing these vibes in the background, funky yet catching that fleeing melody of some hot girl in a small red skirt walking by, making every guy loose their attention and every girl in the joint doing the same.
I really enjoyed this track. Its very groovy but I would have wanted some edge like a sax or similar to make it just that bit more.
Mr Shell is bringing us the music we want in many different ways and in very interesting collaborations with extremely gifted musicians.
Keep it up!

Latin Funk
Simply a stunning track, with some amazing guitar work and atmospheric harmonies. The track lived up to its funky name that is for sure. Real pleasure to listen to. Best of luck and keep up the good work.

Another Planet & Flo Chill
If you are into jazz and funk in any way, then you're in for a real treat with this collection of great songs. Soothing melodies and well-crafted musicianship make this album a master class recording and it all comes out naturally. This is especially true of songs like "Let's Get Down", where the instrumentals easily carry you along. The right mix of vocals in "Movin" brings vibrancy to the quicker tempo. I also liked the unexpected creative approach of "Latin Funk". There are a number of special highlights, most notably for me the features with Matthew Shell. My personal favorites are "Shalom" and "Another Planet", where the soulful textures and colors of the songs are enriched by the deft playing of the artists. This is music with it's own meditative voice and I could sit back and just take it all in. I ordered the download and am very glad I did. This is one album that wants playing many times over. Well done!
