Hi! My name is Margie La Bella and I’ve been working as a music therapist with kids since the mid-80s. I’ve never written blogs before so please have patience with me as I fumble my way about. I figure after 20-something years working with kids, I must have something to say about life as a music therapist so here goes…..

The special education school I work at serves young children. Most of the tykes fits somewhere on the spectrum, and have severe language, conceptual, and social skills issues. I’ve loved having college music therapy student observers, fieldworkers, and interns from the nearby university come and learn how to think like a (music) therapist and facilitate successful groups.

During my first 13 years of work, my school had a program for older kids aged 6-14 and they were diagnosed as having autism, downs syndrome, physical disabilities, learning disabilities and/or emotional problems. I did my internship at a residential school with kids who contended with severe learning disabilities, behavioral issues and/or developmental delays. So I've been around the block. Presently we serve children ages 2-5 and their families.

Real quick about why I chose music therapy as a profession. I wanted to give others the bright light and open door that music provided for me as a kid growing up. So far so good on that. Why do I stay with music therapy? 1. Music (correctly and strategically applied) is a powerful force for growth, change and learning. 2. The brain is “driven” to establish, reinforce, and maintain functioning pathways as well as create alternative/new roads to get jobs done when there is injury, interference or new circumstances.

I was happy to obtain a certificate special education certificate from the state in 2002 and have also obtained the status of music teacher and creative arts therapist.

After completing my school work, I set about compiling, arranging and recording the numerous songs I'd written over the years. The result is the
"Move! Sing! Play along and Learn" series of 4 CDs written for all types of learners. It's been about five years since I've recorded music and I can't wait to get back in the studio.
Several speech therapists have suggested that I arrange standard children's songs so that kids with apraxia and other speech difficulties can sing along. That's my next and upcoming CD!

The “Move! Sing! Play Along and Learn!” CD series is a treat for parent and child or teacher and class. Margie La Bella’s pleasant, soothing voice is easy to understand as she gently encourages kids to listen and learn through music. As a music therapist and special educator, she has written and produced lively entertaining songs for all kids introducing them to pop, jazz, folk, rap, swing, reggae and world music styles. The first CD in the series, “Move!” focuses on building receptive language skills as kids follow directions to “rub your tummy until the music stops,” follow the “Multi-Step Blues,” or learn concepts in the “Opposite Jam.” Move on to “Sing!” and enjoy vocal play and expressive language as kids learn to follow fun syllables that lead to a song about Mister Monkey or the Leeway Train with related actions to match the rhythm. So gather the kids around to move to the music and maybe in the middle of all the fun, we’ll produce some good little listeners.
