ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Motivos" is Maria Rivas' eleventh CD, recorded after a nearly seven-year absence from the recording studio. Known as the ‘Queen of Jazz’ in her native Venezuela, like millions of her fellow citizens Maria has had to flee her home and begin again in a new country. Now hailing from Mallorca, Spain, with “Motivos” Maria is reborn artistically — referring to herself as Maria Fenix. After surviving a major health crisis, this CD is dedicated to “The Love,” in all its forms, that gave her the will and the strength to survive—and by some miracle, performing again stronger and more beautifully than before. In “Motivos” Maria includes her fresh interpretation of Latin American classics, such as the title song, “Motivos”, written by the Venezuelan great Italo Pizzolante, of “Demasiado Tarde” by Mexican composer Roberto Cantoral, “Lluvia en la Tarde” by Arturo Castro, and of course, two songs by Venezuela’s beloved maestro and Maria’s beloved friend and muse, the late Aldemaro Romero, “De Polo a Polo” and “Me Queda el Consuelo”. But there is more! Maria worked with producer JC Torrealba, son of the legendary musician, Juan Vicente Torrealba, to produce a new and fresh version of his classic, “Rosario”, and recorded her voice to the original track of Maestro Torrealba’s “Mujer Llanera” accompanied by the maestro’s legendary Venezuelan harp. What makes this CD truly unique and universal in its appeal is Maria’s Spanish interpretation of American jazz standards “Nature Boy” (“Chico Natural”) and “A Time for Love” (“Es Tiempo Para Amar”) producing a fresh and modern version of these two classics. We can’t forget to mention Maria’s romantic Spanish version of “How Love Should Be” (“El Valle del Amor”) written and performed on this CD by the great Jeremy Lubbock.
With this CD, one of the most sensuous, versatile and memorable voices in today’s Jazz scene revitalizes Latin classics and North American standards with her signature mix of indigenous, Caribbean, European, and African strains. As Latin Grammy award winner Ilan Chester described: “Maria’s music is like no one else’s. I know of no other artist who so effortlessly combines so many different influences and musical styles into a seamlessly beautiful body of work….whatever her musical style, the message is always the same….a message of love for one another….” And in the words of Grammy, Latin Grammy and Emmy award winner Dan Warner, who provides his emotive guitar on this CD for the song “Rosario”: “Maria is an artist of extraordinary talent, a talent that transcends cultural, language and geographic boundaries. She is a national treasure in her own country….and the world deserves the opportunity to hear her.”
