ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A songwriter, poet, librettist, performer and recording artist, Mariénne is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist whose work covers various styles and genres from art song to inspirational to contemporary folk to blues and Broadway. She has produced several albums of original music to positive acclaim: “An unassuming gem” -Boston Globe, “joyfully sensuous” -Dirty Linen, “beguiling” -Minneapolis City Pages. Her diverse background brings a refreshing quality to her writing.

Mariénne has lived in California and Massachusetts where she spent several years performing as a street and club musician. After marrying and moving to Texas in 1990 she discovered her passion for theatre where her husband was technical director and designer at a college. This kindled new works and rewarding collaborations with other artists in theatre, music, dance, and the visual arts. Mariénne’s interest in playwriting and composing for the theatre has intensified and accelerated.

Returning to her home in Minnesota in 2002, Mariénne is the fourth generation on her family farm. Her compositions often reflect a strong sense of place and commitment to honoring the land.

A Masterpiece!
Mariénne Kreitlow’s latest offering Beautiful Illusion is more than an album, it is a pure and elegantly realized artistic vision. It has more in common with a masterful oil painting than a typical CD. Each instrument was delicately chosen with only the utmost care, each harmony exquisitely voiced for maximum lift and swell. Every single note on the album is stirring. Even the tantalizing space between her words will move you.
Incredible!
Few artists are as comfortable writing such beautifully vivid verses as they are breathing truly dynamic life into such wholly captivating and inspiring performances. Mariénne is one of those few. And Beautiful Illusion is her best, most enchanting work to date. Listening to this masterpiece will touch you in glorious ways. Do not miss out on the chance to drench your soul in her magic.

Maybe winter's not so bad...
The first “winter” album I ever heard was Peter Mayer’s “Midwinter” CD. I thought “well of course, he’s from Minnesota where winter is a way of life.
You have to be able to embrace winter to be a Minnesotan.” So here I am reviewing my second ever winter album and guess what – it’s by yet another Minnesotan, the diversely talented Marienne Kreitlow. Now, I am a Florida boy born and raised. The thought of romancing a season in song,
especially that one never occurred to me. But as I listen to Beautiful
Illusion, I can actually catch myself longing for a romp in the snow or an
ice cold slap in the face by wintry air.
I consider Marienne a songwriter first, then a multi instrumentalist, a
poetess and even a thespian because I’ve seen her and husband Jerry blend their talents to create wonderful theatrics in church settings. I am amazed that as I listen, I don’t even have to hear the lyrics about Alvin’s ice
fishin’ outings or “God Bless The Snowstorm” to really get the feel of Minnesota winter. Hmmm. I can only attribute it to consummate songwriting
and production, and to the experience of one who loves and embraces the
season we much too often curse.
Beautiful Illusion combines an eclectic mix of original styles from
Marienne and wonderful interpretations of timeless Christmas classics like
Jolly Old St. Nicholas (as a sweet ballad) with added lyrics by Marienne or
“O Christmas Tree” woven into an original song, “A Girl And Her Christmas
Tree”. Her wintry musical pallet is sprinkled with ethnic percussion, penny
whistle, accordion, mandolin, cello and flute. In this day and age of “the
single” I found myself longing to bring back this whole idea of a concept album where the artist can stretch out and give us, not just listenable
hooks but deeper emotions that would most likely drown in the downloading
frenzy of the internet.
You can listen to Beautiful Illusion and think you are hearing an R&B
artist one minute, then a jazz artist the next, then avante-garde , and even
a folk artist yet again. I love that kind of diversity and I love this CD. If I listen to it a couple more times, I just may find myself loving these Kansas City Winters.
Thank you Marienne!

A classy seasonal album!
A really classy seasonal album. Lush, unusual production, no covers, nothing cute or kitchy. Kreitlow has succeeded in releasing a celebration of both winter and the holidays with a non-commerical, so very Midwestern perspective.

This long awaited CD is a great exploratory effort from a veteran singer/songwriter. Her voice is trained and mature, her accompaniments classically and beautifully constructed. A great CD to play or own!

A winter treasure
Is this a Christmas album? In part, but it is more a celebration of Minnesota winters. It is now almost a year since the release, and winter is just shortly around the corner. Once again I can look forward to sitting warm in my living room, watching the snow come down and listening to Marienne sing the magic of winter.
