ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
One afternoon, I listened to his music.
His groove,sound,and dynamics.
The way he used the space between the notes.
I loved the choices that he made
on the album called "Heavier Things".

David LaBruyere. He plays bass with John Mayer.
When he kindly agreed to play music with me,
that became the foundation of this album.
I was so inspired, I wrote in the zone.

David invited Michael Chaves and Don Heffington for
the session. Michael invited Victor Indrizzo.
That's how the rhythm section was born.
Two of my long time engineers, Brian Reeves mixed,
Brian "Big Bass" Gardner mastered the tracks.
I thank everyone who helped me create this album.

Impossible is possible when you're inspired.

So here it is.
I proudly present my brand new album
"Wonderful People" to you

Wonderful People is simply wonderful!
This is an album that shows off the confidence and expertise of a long standing artist -- yet possesses the wonderful qualities of being particularly dynamic, fresh, and a viable music alternative to the mainstream

The body of work in Wonderful People stands up as a wonderful collection of adult contemporary music -- however, unlike most AC music, it goes out of the box to re-think the genre with a creative and dynamic energy that is normally not found in the AC genre

Eminently listenable, here are some of the highlights of the CD:

"3-D" has a wonderful pop sensibility to it -- it reminds that it could be used as soundtrack music -- but very rarely is S/T music as good as this -- this is unique music in that it takes you for an emotional ride -- you can feel the vibrancy of the song and its message, whether you understand Japanese or not -- transcendence: that is a sign of music quality of a very high order

"Unspoken Love" has a current adult contempo feel -- it reminds a lot of John Mayer type arrangements -- you know the kind, very sparse yet musically vibrant and fresh

"Complete" has a brilliant contemporary jazzy simplicity -- this is very high level adult contemporary music, and out of the box, is high level music -- period. -- the lyrics are very expressive of a perfect relationship of balance, the guitar and keyboard interaction make for interesting compatible harmonies

"Tuesday" is one of the most emotive ballads in terms of style and feel that we have heard in a long time ... there is a distinctive feel to this song that just transports you -- it has that elusive emotional "it" factor -- I've tried to put in words a comparison to what it is like, it gives off a soaring feel like when love is new

"Wonderful People", "River", and "I Can't Hide" round out the the remaining tracks -- each brings forth an adept understanding of arranging music and making music with emotion and heart -- with no sacrifice to listenability

A wonderful musical alternative -- very highly recommended.

Hard to describe...one the best CD's I've bought!
One of the beautiful things about music is that it's universal. Good music is good music no matter what the language or genre. "Wonderful People" is one of the best CD's I've bought. The day I got it, it didn't leave my CD player. The songs are catchy, yet deep even though I don't speak or understand Japanese. Nevertheless, the English songs are inspiring as well. I'm a big fan of Jon Mayer's "Room For Squares" album so it's pointless to say the musicianship on this album is fantastic. I'm an official Mari Iijima fan!

Another enjoyable album!
This keeps up to the quality of Mari's previous works. I don't have any more specifics. It's fun and cheerful to listen to.

The packaging for this one is very nice, and the graphics/layout very appealing (I say this as a graphic artist myself).

What you've been waiting for... You won't be let down!
The eagerly anticipated "Wonderful People" is finally here! More than just beautiful packaging (check out that cover!), "Wonderful People" is a musical journey that is positive, uplifting, melodic and honest... something lacking in most of today's music scene.

"3D" is a brilliantly crafted song with a great hook. The tune is so catchy it could easily be used as a TV theme song for the japan market. Extremely uplifting, this track gears you up for the rest of the album. A great way to start!

The backing of David LaBruyere on bass and Michael Chaves on guitar (both from John Mayer's Band) give "Unspoken Love" the solid foundation it needs for Mari's great vocals. The band gives this track its driving, atmospheric feel that blends in perfectly with Mari's song writing. Definitive Iijima groove.

The laid back smooth sound of "Complete" compliments Mari's voice. Her lyrics speak of devotion and love in a relationship where there is a deep understanding of each other. "You complete me just the way i like, no ones above, no ones beneath" she writes. Her poetic analogies between nature and love are refreshingly straight forward and clever. This track has soul.

The upbeat techno driven feel of the title track "Wonderful People" exemplifies Mari's growth in her sound and song writing abilities. The trippy harmonies during the chorus are extremely hip. Furthermore, Mari breaks down the barriers of color and race in her lyrics. The manner in which she weaves in and out of English and Japanese so naturally showcases what Wonderful People is about: "We are the light, We are perfect, We are all Wonderful People".

"Tuesday" starts off with a beautiful string quartet introduction and leads us to Mari's solo electric piano and tender vocals. The lyrics, while all in Japanese, are emotionally charged and only add to the way the song transitions from soft, light keys to full band and strings. This is one of those songs where you need to just close your eyes and "feel" what the song is all about. For those of us who can't speak Japanese, Mari posted the English lyrics on her website. They are beautiful... poetic... moving. This song is by far my favorite!

"River" blends pop feel with sparse atmospheric instruments and a catchy melody. Again Mari breaks down the barriers by blending Japanese in the chorus with English answerbacks in the counter melody. Brilliant! LaBruyere and Chaves are the driving force on this song. Notably, check out Chaves' unorthodox sound on his guitars.

The beautifully done ballad "I Can't Hide" rounds out this set and describes a situation we've all been through before when we meet a new love. "I wrote a monologue just to leave a message, How silly am I, When the machine picked up my call, I lost all my lines". Mari's straight forward lyrics give an added innocence and tenderness to the new love in this track. This song will tug at your heartstrings with its honesty and simplicity. Extremely AC, this should be on Top 40 radio.

Overall, "Wonderful People" really showcases Mari's song writing ability and her continued growth as a musician. Put it in the cd player of your car and go for a drive... it will be a while before you change the CD. "Wonderful People" is positively addicting!
