Across the Miles at Christmas

by Mark Courtney

I've been influenced strongly by traditional and contemporary folk music, including American, Canadian and Celtic. I'm drawn to lyrics that incorporate both story-telling and substantive messages, with occasional excursions into the purely rhythmic and even goofy.

Yip Harburg, that great tin-pan alley composer (Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Brother Can You Spare a Dime?), once said “Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.” I hope a few of my songs do that.
