Album Notes
I first want to say thank you for purchasing this CD and give a huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in this project, I am eternally grateful! HUSTLE is exactly what it suggests, a CD full of activity, edgy in places but also has beauty, it is contemporary but also traditional. I really hope you enjoy it!

Between 2012 and 2016 I lived in Singapore and a big mission of mine was to get the euphonium out to new audiences. I was finding opportunities for recitals and travel so I started asking composers and arrangers to write for me, mainly so my recital programmes could be unique. I had a crazy thought that one day I would record some of this music and after a lot of hard work, time, money, patience and belief, HUSTLE is the result.

Along with having new music written, I like to borrow from other instruments. The first track is an example of this in the form of Sholem Alekhem, Rov Freidman. Originally written by Béla Kovács for the clarinet, this klezma style solo is extremely fun to play on the euphonium. Next is the major work on the CD, “Euphoria!” by Singaporean composer Zaidi Sabtu-Ramli. It was premiered in Limeira, Brazil in November 2015 in it’s wind band form but this recording contains the piano reduction which was kindly completed by Simon Kerwin. Movement 1 is Mania, powerful and technically challenging. Movement 2 is A Lucid Dreamin’ dedicated to my daughter Lucy and featuring some beautiful melodies which build and grow through to a Gamelan inspired end. Movement 3 is Nirvana, playful but demanding music inspired by dances like the waltz and the samba.

Pavane by Fauré is next, expertly arranged by Wesley Kendrick and dedicated whole heartedly to my mom and dad. The next track is Scherzo, a new work by Asaad Hamzy. Possibly the first Syrian composer to write for the euphonium and his piece is very much a duet rather than an outright solo for the euphonium. Before moving to Singapore I had the opportunity to work with a handbell ensemble and Wes’s arrangement of Bell’s Across the Meadow was one of the products of this collaboration. After recording the next work, I joked that this would be the first and last time I ever compose a piece for myself, we will see whether this is the case but Through Her Eyes is a unique piece originally taken from a riff I composed on the guitar. The Devil’s Tongue has been a favourite show piece of mine for a while, excellent for demonstrating the art of triple tonguing. Euphtude is a study for euphonium composed by distinguished conductor, Steven Lloyd-Gonzales.

The final two items have great meaning to me. Lullaby for Lucy was written as a gift for my daughter by Alex Thio and was premiered in Jakarta in February 2016. As it happened Alex was to accompany me for my recital at the 2016 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Knoxville, Tennessee. I asked Zaidi if he would write a solo for Alex and I to perform in the recital, Hustle in Jozi was the result. Premiered in Hong Kong in May 2016, it is a fascinating piece of music inspired by the sights and sounds of Johannesburg and a true symbol for the diversity, the journey and the emotion that is HUSTLE.
