Album Notes

Take-off Guitar!

Mark Holzinger
Reel Zinger Records

It seems like it wasn’t that long ago that I remember saving my allowance and planning a trip to the record shop to look through bin after bin of old jazz and foreign titles. I would go with a friend and we would spend hours searching and I can recall many times buying an early blues or rock album, rushing home, putting it on the turn table and reading the liner notes while listening.

Any warped records we needed to play had to have the penny placed on the stylus to weigh it down so the needle would not skip. True story. It was like a crazy dream to enjoy every word and romantic notion, perhaps a cultural ritual that has now gone away.

Mark Holzinger’s Take-off Guitar release is a fresh throwback to that day. The music has that classic sound when you think of early swing played on the radio in the 1940’s and 50’s. The guitar had taken over the world and it started when guitar pioneers like Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian and Joe Pass made the guitar an important sound in jazz.

The CD imagery on the new Holzinger offering is steeped in retro art, which tends to capture the simplistic cover image of an old time record, sparse on color but very telling.
In those days it seems there was no intentional direction to the artwork of an esthetic design or art “concept” album.

Take-off Guitar! uses some pictographs from the martini days of the 50’s… the robot and the young couple dancing on the old 33’s and ’78’s. The 50s clip art really fits the music.

By the way, we need to ask award winning guitarist Mark Holzinger what was the advice your mentor Barney Kessel gave you?
