Album Notes
Mark Nicholas is a Detroit-based electronic musician, well known in the underground Synthpop community as the man behind the band Cosmicity. Cosmicity was active from 1994-2003, selling tens of thousands of albums during that time. Now recording under his given name, Mark has shed the confines of pristine, 80’s-influenced Synthpop for a modern hybrid electronic sound – a sound he calls Dirty Electronic.

There’s nothing pristine or elegant about the sound of the synthesizers and drum machines you’ll hear on Mark’s debut album “Duchess 33” (released February 6th, 2007). In fact, everything’s just a little bit filthy, from the production straight through to the lyrics. Distortion-washed… clipped… crushed… and divine.

One track from the album, “Backlash”, garnered some early attention after being selected as one of only 3 finalists in the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the Electronic category. Subsequently posted on their website - well ahead of its scheduled debut on “Duchess 33” - the song has since received a huge listener response. Other early favorites include “Green”, “Perverse”, and “Little Goth Girl”, the latter of which chronicles the story of a “straight-edge” entering a Goth club for the first time.

“Duchess 33” has drawn early comparisons to Prodigy and Depeche Mode, but, like most satisfying new music, it’s generally difficult to categorize. A recent fan e-mail to Mark probably says it best:

“Dude, seriously… the new songs kick ass! …it has elements if Goldfrapp, Nine Inch Nails, and even DM, yet it sounds very unique.”

do not miss this album !
the duchess becomes the queen. i just zipped through this amazing 11 song pre release copy of d33..what can be said? this album captures trip hop/industrial/new wave and club music and slams the divergent elements into your eardrums with awesome hooks, bombastic and poignant lyrics and memorable percussion that lingers long after you step out of the car. the only may induce severe sex cravings and the desire to dance naked on our car. yes- it's that good, folks. the man deserves a grammy. this is the most unique thing i have ever heard. in my mind at least....mark is the supreme dark lord of the synth - bow down jedi scum ! he's comin for you.

"Let's go...Come on shall we?"
With his project Cosmicity, Mark Nicholas was like an electronic Burt Bacharach: sweet melodies with lyrics to match.

Now, he's completely shattering that image, reinventing himself with a form of music he calls "Dirty Electronic". DE is pretty much a mash-up of old school industrial, hip-hop, and dance on top of his synth-pop background. Add to those sexy groves some saucy lyrics, and you've got "Duchess 33".

This is an amazing cd, I like it.

Pure Genius
This record is excellent! Great melodies through out. The lyrics are dark and edgy. Lots of great analogue sounds. Stand out tracks are Green, I'm Trying To Impress You, Little Goth Girl, and Coming Clean. A lot of hard work was put into this record by Mark and it shows! BUY IT!!! You will not be disappointed with anything on here!
