ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Marlene Tholl has enjoyed a rich career as a riveting and enigmatic actress, performance artist, vocalist, and playwright. Writing and performing in residence at The Knitting Factory in New York she worked with the late Joseph Marques of Winter Hours, They Might Be Giants collaborator Joshua Fried, and Mike Doughty of Soul Coughing. Her successful decade in theater prepared Tholl well for her debut singer-songwriter release, KORE, now out on Small and Green Records.

On her debut solo CD, Tholl has fused the darker elements of 70’s rock (Grace Slick, Richard Thompson) with ethereal yet powerful Celtic-influenced vocals (Miranda Sex Garden, Loreena McKennitt, Kate Bush) and a contemporary pop feel (Beth Orton, Jane Siberry). Incorporating gothic, electronica, trip-hop, freak folk, epic rock, world, even jazz and classical elements, the result is rich, layered and satisfying for listeners of all passions and tastes.

“This is more than a CD for me,” Marlene declares. “This album represents a complete artistic statement; the photography, the imagery in my lyrics, the related poetry, the mythology behind the title, the introduction of medieval and Middle Eastern instrumentation. This project is about my life as a woman and coming to terms with myself”. Tholl has managed to create an album that is highly thematic and cohesive, not unlike it’s 70’s and 80’s predecessors where each song is part of a larger story. The recording holds together like a novel and is beautifully consistent, yet each song stands alone. An all-star band is featured: Tristram Lozaw of former U2 tour mates The Somebodies; Doug Vargas, who formed The Young Snakes along with Aimee Mann; and Joey Pesce, formerly of 'Til Tuesday.
