ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Marta Topferova - vocals, cuatro, percussion & compositions
Stanislav Palúch - violin
Marcel Comendant - cimbalom
David Dorůžka - acoustic & electric guitar
Petr Dvorský - acoustic bass

Marta Topferova's ninth CD, "Tento svět", or "This world" in English, is a culmination of a very dynamic and fascinating musical career.

The album features nine of Marta' s latest original songs and lyrics, as well as lyrics by three Czech poets - Věra Provazníková, Jan Zahradníček and Antonín Sova.

The songs draw inspiration from Czech, Moravian and other Slavic folk music, as well as flamenco, Latin American influences, and the diverse music scene of New York City, where Marta spent sixteen years.

The Milokraj ensemble is comprised of some of the most cutting edge Eastern-European musicians: Stanislav Palúch on the violin, whose playing combines brilliant melodic lines, improvisation and ornamentation which often evokes bird songs; Marcel Comendant on the cimbalom, whose musical palette ranges from serene luminous tones that fall like drops of water, to fiery solos influenced by his Moldavian background; David Dorůžka on acoustic and electric guitar, who brings unparalleled creativity and sonic impressionism to the mix, and Petr Dvorský on the acoustic bass, whose warm tone, versatility and superb musicianship give a firm foundation to the recording.

Marta's voice has undoubtedly matured in recent years and developed a very unique sound, full of longing, hope and peace all at the same time.

The CD booklet includes original lyrics in Czech and full English translations.

Tento svět CD review
From the moment the music starts and her voice - which at once demands my undivided attention, and keeps it - begins to sing, she takes me on a very touching journey. There's a kind of ancient longing, then an unsentimental acceptance, a gentle, very feminine wisdom, and joy even, sometimes in the space of a few phrases. There is nothing black and white in these songs, just as in our life. The music flows freely, seamlessly from mood to mood, without restrictions. Sometimes it seems that contrasting colors are expressed simultaneously, in a way that feels impossible to my ordinary ears, but which feels completely at home in the musical landscape she invites me into. This music feels like it's pointing towards a different life.

Minors to majors, changes of rhythms, defying clichés and norms without trying to sound 'original': very natural and simple, yet intricate and subtle. And as I listen, her music brings me back to something truer in myself. Teaching me something. Simply put, it's beautiful. Very beautiful. All this to me, can be defined as beauty. You can taste the care and attention to detail Marta has put into every note that she and her wonderful band deliver in this deeply stirring labour of love.
