Album Notes
In 1990, I was doing a sort of Christmas review with Kate Bordeaux and Katy Thomasberg, as "The Collective," an a cappella womens' group. Katy remarked how odd it was to be doing Christmas music since she's a bit of a Pagan. I told her I'd write a song about the Solstice. When I began to struggle, I called upon my sister, Amy (Winkler) Hamm, to come up with the rest of the song, and so "Ornaments" was born.

Many years later, after performing songs like Joni Mitchell's beautiful song "River," I wrote a song for a competition which talked about the Virgin Mother and her baby, called "Just for Now." My friend Bob Hart suggested that I submit it to someone like Amy Grant for a Christmas album, and I thought, "Why not do a 'Christmas' album myself?" That's how this album came to be. Largely crafted by Michael C. Steele and M. Lee Davis, with a little help from Christina Gifford, it is all I could want from a holi-day album.

The sound of "Silent"
The mark of a really great singer to me is the ability to take an over-worn song and make its lyrics suddenly seem new and vital, as if you're hearing them for the first time. That's what Marty Winkler, with only her gorgeous, pure soprano and a marvelous piano player (M. Lee Davis, it says in the liner notes), does with her deeply emotional reading of "Silent Night." It's elegant, heartfelt, soaring, humbling-- a peace prayer reignited. The rest of her six track holiday is just as lovely, especially her perfect cover version of Joni Mitchell's "River"; her own "Just for Now," in which she voices the thoughts of Mary as she holds her new born child of destiny; and the title track, "Ornaments," a sort of pagan carol. This is the best little Christmas album of the year.

Great album Marty! Your voice just continues to improve. I especially love "Silent Night" and "Just for Now". I'm definitely recommending this to my friends.
