Album Notes
Jan Marvel's songs shift from image-oriented stories to poetic metaphors that paint in broader emotional brushstrokes.

If you like lyrics you can sink your teeth into, Jan Marvel has them.

A voice unique and yet "immediately likeable" (Songwriter's Monthly)

Music that is appreciated by people who are sensitive & intelligent, looking for more than watered-down tunes with a dance beat. If you like music that takes you on a journey, this is it.

"Reaches out and grabs you by the heart and doesn't let go", says one listener.

Intense, powerful, but at the same time, healing & soothing to the soul. A musical journey that you will return to again & again.

Northeast Performer

Adult contemporary fare that soars on the strength of Marvel's heartfelt songs and rich, expressive vocals. Backed by a supertight band (lead guitarist Greg Paul is superb) Marvel's Too Close To Reality presses all the right slick pop buttons.

Songwriter's Monthly

Jan has a rich, creamy voice that is like dark chocolate. She is immediately likeable. Her songs shift from image-oriented stories to poetic metaphors that paint in broader emotional brushstrokes. Middle of the road AAA with maybe a touch of "Americana".

Metronome Magazine

Singer-songwriter Jan Marvel is accompanied by a host of impressive local(Boston,MA)musicians on her debut CD, Too Close To Reality. Marvel's pensive songwriting style is both emotional and contemplative. It has a relaxed, laid back quality that is soothing to the soul. Produced by musician extraordinaire Linda Chase, Marvel acquires the talent of Chase, drummer Dave Currier, guitarists Greg Paul and Bobby Keyes, bassist Sean Hurley and the late Steve Olsen on guitar to build this respectable effort worthy of praise and merit.

C.s. Park

A deeply stirring album.
I found this to be an incredibly moving musical experience. The artist puts words to the emotions that we all deal with. If you are tired of songs that sound so good and say so little, this is what you are looking for. Shear musical talent, earthy vocals and raw lyrics, fuse to form this revolutionary album. You will wonder, "Where have these songs been all my life?"

Laura Pope, Nh Union Leader Newspaper

She wants to write songs 'that mean something'...Marvel, like female performers such as Natalie Merchant, has sung about troubling social issues, but she also presents light and upbeat numbers.

Musical therapy
In the track "Friday Afternoon" Jan sings that in her head she's writing desperate songs. Too Close To Reality is a collection of these songs, most of them written about the desperate situations of abuse. Despite the fear and the pain echoing through them, hope still fights to be heard...I love the piano work and blues edge of "Freight Train"...The lyrics pulled me in to an experience of minute-to-minute uncertainty: "I guess he's done for now, oh no, here he comes one more time..." Her voice builds on this line...Jan also brings a nightmarish echo to life in "Altar Boys". The keyboards sound like quiet thunder in the background, and Jan's voice takes on a cold, hard edge. There is a definite unspoken warning in the undercurrent of this song. Brilliantly done...Jan's lyrics are conversational and casual, yet catching. They feel like an intimate converstation...I think fans of Joni Mitchell and Alanis Morrisette will like Jan Marvel...Too Close To Reality is musical therapy for anyone who feels like they have no voice. The courage Jan Marvel shows by being honest and painfully visual can bring hope to listeners who know firsthand what she is singing about.

Kathryn Livingston, First Person Plural - Uk

This is one of the best and most touching, spoken from and to the heart albums I have heard in recent years. I stumbled across it while surfing the Internet. After listening to the few sound clips at the record company site, I just had to buy it. I have played it over and over since receiving it in the post. My favourite tracks are "Kaleidoscope" and "Dancin' In Denial".

Dark lyrics that move you!
Great songs - emotions on the sleeve - music and arrangements compliment the words perfectly, vocals stronger than all the other alternative-type women singer-songwriters.

A Music Fan

Absolutely incredible music!
Jan Marvel is an incredible performer with a passionate message of survivorship to tell. She does that through her music, it's powerful and healing. It reaches in and grabs you by the heart. First class production. Tell your friends about this one.

Singin Rose

A Really Great CD!
I liked this so much, I've already told several friends about it. It's hard to say which I like more - the music, Jan Marvel's voice, the emotion in each song or the lyrics. I would definitely recommend this CD to anyone, especially survivors.
