Telemann in the Flint Hills

by Mary Holzhausen

The beauty of Telemann's Fantasies for solo flute is subtle and mesmerizing. These works won't jump up and grab you like a Beethoven Symphony, instead they slowly wrap themselves around you like a fog hovering over the Flint Hills.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This collection of Fantasies for solo flute represents so much more than the body of work written by Telemann around the year 1732. These works embody the unique and creative voice of a prolific composer who was able to create 12 simple works for solo flute that explore the realms of key and form while continually remaining fresh and alive. Telemann takes us on a journey through the 12 keys and deliciously alternates between major to minor giving us slow, sorrowful moments that are soothed by spirited leaps and peppy dances.
Beyond these works, is the journey that I went on to record them. As an artist, I am continually questioning my voice and relevance. As a mother I am continually wondering if I am doing enough for my children. This pull between my creative life and the daily reality of laundry, paying the bills, food, dogs, cats, gigs, teaching, school and other responsibilities can be overwhelming and leave me wondering where have all the years gone. Where did my career as a professional musician go?
Back in the year 2015, I made the simple goal of trying to record one Telemann Fantasy a month for a year. Five years later, I finally finished! In those five years I played concerts, played at the National Flute Association Convention, applied for my dream job at my alma mater, never got the dream job, quit music, got a full time job, earned my teaching certificate, quit teaching, started playing flute again, and finally finished Telemann! This journey of five years is much like the 12 Fantasies. There were ups and downs and moments of joy and many moments of despair. As I turned back to these works, my voice as a musician was truly becoming my own. I stopped listening to recordings that have been previously made and just started to play them from the heart. The improvisations are more spontaneous and less planned out. The articulations and dynamics continually change with every performance and are much less static.
These recordings are all made in one take. They are not edited. This means that all of the imperfections are there for the listener to hear and hopefully overlook! They are a representation of where I was on that given day in that given year. They are not meant to be polished and perfect. They truly are my voice as I was desperately trying to hold onto that which is my heart’s true voice, music.
