Album Notes
Matt’s music is rooted in a profound love for the early jazz masters. What makes him unique is his application of early jazz piano devices created by Ragtime, Blues and Stride musicians. His love of classic jazz piano inspires him to pursue a thorough musicianship that fuses traditional elements with modern jazz concepts.

The foundation for the album "Stride-Bop" is in the solo piano stride style (Thomas "Fats" Waller and Art Tatum), but incorporates a unique blend of styles within the Jazz genre, from the sounds of Teddy Wilson and Erroll Garner fused with Bebop a la Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell and Phineas Newborn Jr. Listen as pianist Matt DeChamplain approaches the piano in a fresh and interesting way reworking familiar standards and interpreting his own compositions.

Matt is a Connecticut based pianist who has opened for Wynton Marsalis,Hank Jones and Michael Wolff, and shared the stage with Jazz luminaries such as Dave Brubeck, Jon Hendricks, Steve Davis, Nat Reeves, Paul Keller, Jose Feliciano, and Jaimoe. He has played at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the JVC Jazz Festival in NYC and the Kennedy Center and has studied with pianists Andy LaVerne, Barry Harris and Dr. Billy Taylor. You can also hear him as a sideman on albums by Norman Johnson, Jon Hendricks and Jason Anick. Check out Matt's first solo piano album, "Stride-Bop", as he honors the incredible musicians who have inspired him within the Jazz tradition!

"Matt DeChamplain is a pianist of extraordinary skills and musicality. I had the pleasure of working with Matt at the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School for four years. During that time, Matt made Giant Steps in his musical evolution. I think I learned as much from Matt as he did from me! Matt graduated at the top of his class, and is well on his way to world class musician status, with a lot to say. All we have to do is listen and enjoy.” –ANDY LAVERNE
