Album Notes
“Matt, why haven’t you recorded before?” “I can’t believe this is your first recording!” “What’s stopped you doing this sooner?” These questions have been asked of me many, many times over the past few months. The answer is; I’m not sure. I have wanted to record for a long time. Do you know the feeling? You really want to do something but you just can’t get started. Because it’s big and important and you want to do it properly.

But now it’s done I feel such a wonderful sense of satisfaction that I ask the same questions of myself. I’ve taught myself that sometimes you have to just do it. You have to just bury the fear and plunge in because you just never know what joy there might be waiting for you. I remind myself time and time again when I really just lay it on the line I feel fantastically satisfied and proud.

No more so than with this recording. It was self motivated, self funded and for the most part self produced and I have learnt so much in the process. Some hard lessons that hurt and some wonderful lessons that exhilarated and all will serve me for the rest of my life.

There is a lot of love and hard work mixed with skill and courage in this recording. We played most of the songs all at once in the studio and so there is an integration of performance that is not too common in recorded music these days. Importantly the songs represent my love for different musical styles. Some powerful rock sounds and some gentle tender messages.

That sums me up and sums up what I love to do with my voice. I love the extremes; when my body aches for air in an intense rock song and when I can feel the gentle vibration of my voice singing tenderly. I poured my heart into this project. I hope you feel it. Some of the songs touch on some extremely personal subjects. All of them are significant. ‘I Get Excited’ is about the joy of becoming a dad and ‘Oscar’ is about the journey that delivered Melissa and I the love of our lives, our beautiful son.

I don’t know where to start in my thanks for making this recording happen. The list is long and full of wonderful, loving, supportive people. There’s not enough room to mention everyone that contributed to it’s coming about; because it spans almost my whole life. Friends, family, fellow singers and musicians that have formed the landscape of my professional life in music. So many people that either helped me through direct advice and teachings or by simply inspiring me through a display of their brilliance. So to all of you I say a huge thanks.

It’s important that I give special mention to those that have directly helped me FINALLY release an album. I needed help to believe it could happen. I needed someone aside from me to help battle the inner voice that continually threw up excuses.

Where to start? To Andrew McSweeney who has inspired me as much as anyone. Mate you gave me the confidence and the drive to do it and for that I thank you. You carry yourself with such humility. You really made me believe I ‘would’ do it.

Sean McLeod, who has been the driving force behind me in the live arena for many years. A musician of exceptional skill and passion. You are a great friend. I needed great people to believe in me and encourage me and you were there to help me believe I ‘could’ do it.

Tommy Rando you’re encouragement and unconditional support helped me piece together an exceptional group of musicians that have now brought life to a bunch of brand new songs. I needed someone who plays with passion and a quiet confidence and you’re heart shines through your music whenever you play.

Luke Furjan, “I just want to help you achieve this”. You said it over and over. We write together and have been friends for so many years. Some of these songs have just been waiting for the chance to fly. We share a passion for creating and you’re constant support and care has been more help to me than you will ever know. Thank you mate.

Robert J Sedky, working with you on ‘I Won’t Be The One’ has laid the foundation for a great friendship and exciting partnership. This is our first experience together and you have displayed a massive amount of care and love for me. Your commitment to the detail and quality is inspiring.

Dave Carter, you were there to do whatever was needed and also offered other ideas that have helped shape this album. You are an exceptional musician. I am a huge fan. I say a huge thank you for your amazing contribution to this recording.

Jamie Osborn, we’ve performed together 1000 times and you are always ready to support me when I need you. No matter what’s happening in your world you make the time to be there. It continually amazes me. Thank you so much.

Paul Shirley, it was very importasnt to have you involved in this. We have done so much together over the years. Thank you for your beautiful contribution.

Janine Maunder, all I can is WOW. That’s what everyone says about you. Your voice is sublime.

I wanted to include many musicians that have helped me develop into the artist I am today and I feel so privileged to have had some awesome performances from some of my favourite people. So I give a huge thank you to Andy McIvor, Rod Bustos, Andrew Leach, Sean Rankin, Rob McMillan, Steve Allan, John Kendall and the Squids Choir.

Mitch Cairns, you saved me mate. In my time of need you were ready and eager to do whatever needed to be done.

Ricki Rae you are a magician. Your spirit and attention to detail has made this recording sound as awesome as it does. I’ll never forget the tears streaming down my face when I first heard ‘I Get Excited’. This song carries massive significance and it was even more than I hoped it would be.

My final thanks goes to my family; my wife Melissa and my son Oscar. You are my life and I feel incredibly blessed to feel your love every day. My Mum Pat, you have inspired me every day of my life and I know I am who I am because of you. My drive to be the bets I can be is because of you. My Dad Dave, you taught me to respect the music and respect the form. I still learn that from you. It’s crucial and the key to a fulfilling life in music, Andy Seath, thank you for your constant support and encouragement. Your wisdom and willingness to share is hugely significant in my life. I started this by saying I can’t thank every one. It’s dangerous to start because you run the risk of inexplicably omitting that special someone. I pray I haven’t but it’s possible so to all of you that have inspired and helped me. THANK YOU.
