Album Notes
Aisling Agnew and Matthew McAllister met in Glasgow whilst studying at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Their joint passion for chamber music, interacting with composers and performing new music immediately brought them together. Since giving their debut recital in the ‘Harty Room’ of Queen’s University, Belfast in 2001 they have grown in popularity and the Duo is now recognised as one of the leading exponents of the genre. Their debut album Recital, affirms this reputation – featuring a wide range of virtuosic and beautiful music from around the globe.

The duo have given many high profile concerts over the years. On tour in North America they have performed for the New England Flute Fair in Boston, Greater Portland Flute Fair, Pittsburgh Flute Club in Pennsylvania, James Madison University in Virginia, Willamette University in Oregon, North Eastern Pennsylvania Classical Guitar Society and the Ventura County Classical Guitar Society. From 2005-2008 the Irish Government’s Heritage Initiative invited the duo to tour Ireland’s medieval castles and historic houses giving evening recitals in stunning settings such as Roscrea Castle, Christ Church Cathedral Dublin, Muckross House in Killarney and Rathfarnham Castle. The duo has also performed extensively across the UK and highlights have included the British Flute Society’s Seventh International Convention in Manchester, launching the ‘Southwell Reflections’ concert series, recitals in the Ramshorn Theatre in Glasgow, National Galleries of Scotland, Ilkley Manor House, Welshpool Music Society, Aberdeen Chamber Music Club, St Bride’s Fleet Street in London, St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh and their chamber music residency in Strathgarry as finalists of the Tunnell Trust Chamber Music Prize.

The Agnew McAllister Duo have worked closely with several composers over the years such as Greg Caffrey, Edward McGuire, David Fennessy, Douglas Whates, Klaus Ager, Wijnand van Klaveren and Veronique Vella and they have given many première performances and recordings of new works for Flute and Guitar. The Duo’s première recording of Greg Caffrey’s Pluck, Blow II (The Return) was recently featured on RTE Lyric FM’s latest CD release Hiccup, having been selected from 65 works commissioned by RTE over the past 8 years. Recent activities include a concert tour of Peru and Costa Rica in August 2009; the concerts in Peru, at the invitation of the Centro Cultural Britanico, took place at the Teatro Británico, followed by concerts at the Asociación Cultural Peruano Británica´s auditoriums throughout Lima. Whilst resident in Lima, Aisling and Matthew collaborated with local musicians and composers and gave the première of that year’s national prize winning composition. The Duo then travelled to San Jose, Costa Rica and gave recitals at The Teatro Eugene O’Neil and The Jazz Cafe of Escazu alongside conducting masterclasses at The University of Costa Rica. In October 2009 the duo performed a programme of contemporary music featuring world premières from both Irish and Scottish composers at the Barockmuseum in Salzburg and later that month they travelled to the Gitaarsalon in Enkhuizen, Holland for a residency, giving concerts, masterclasses and recording performances on DVD. Highlights from 2010 included returning to North America for a month-long concert tour, revisiting flute clubs, societies and universities giving performances and classes and in September the Duo embarked on a tour of Malaysia giving concerts, workshops and concerto performances in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Johor Bahru. In 2011 Aisling and Matthew celebrated 10 years of performing together with a wide variety of concerts, commissions and live recordings and the Duo is looking forward to many high profile concerts in 2012 including festivals in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Sicily, Bosnia & Herzegovina and the National Flute Association’s 40th International Convention in Las Vegas.
