Album Notes

Matthew P Smith is an upcoming guitarist from the west coast of Canada. Initially picking up the guitar back in early high school (1995), Matt immediately found himself submersed in the instrument, practicing many hours each day. From there, he promptly joined the high school jazz band and began expanding his repertoire and experimenting with new techniques and compositional arrangements. However, this was not enough to fulfill his musical ambitions and he quickly branched out, jamming with various musicians in his hometown. Matthew has played in various ensembles and his most long-term and successful project (Electric Blues Euphoria) has had the opportunity to perform in several prestigious music festivals on the west coast, as well as open up for several famous Canadian musicians, including Matt Good, Todd Kerns, and acoustic guitar legend Don Alder. In late 2003, Matt finally got his act together and decided to pursue his own solo career as a musician. With his newfound freedom, Matthew holds nothing back -- showcasing his fretwork through winding tunes, hypnotic grooves, and odd time signatures. Indeed, Matthew's knowledge of the guitar shines through on his new instrumental album, 'Red Light District', featuring all original tunes and intricate guitar work. His style is truly unique, combining elements of various genres (i.e. rock, funk, blues, and classical) into his own trademark sound.

Guitar Nine Records

The album features all original tunes in a rock style, where he incorporates elements of funk, metal, blues and classical into the compositions. Smith likes to incorporate scorching guitar solos into his work, which is influenced by artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Buckethead, Jeff Healy, Jimi Hendrix, Al De Meola, John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia, Stanley Jordan, Rusty Cooley, Adam Fulara, Marcel Coenen and Shawn Lane. Smith probably has a lot more CDs in the pipeline - with more experience in the recording process some good things are bound to happen.
