Album Notes
Every record has a story behind it right?

I hope so.So many records come up these days,.I wonder how many stories are being told.Of course some peeps don't want to tell a story, they just want people to hear their music. As much as I try to be a writer, telling a story is paramount for me in music.I wish I could sit with Herbie Hancock and ask him about who the SORCERER really was. What led WAYNE to Infant eyes? I have come to discover that Trane is not only one of my favorite players, but composers as well.Trane was such a great composer, through every evolution.Records, sides, downloads, whatever form they take,..don't mean as much as they used to.They still mean a great deal to me however. Each record is a chance to document YOURSELF.Records are your chance to leave a mark on the world. If everything comes together,.they will last long after your gone. How many records today will stand the test of time? I can only dream to make a record,or just a song, that someone will listen to as much as I have listened to INTERSTELLAR SPACE,.what I have recently accepted as my favorite Coltrane record. To me,.that was really the last record he made,it was from his own future, and a window,a gateway he was headed for in a literal and music sense. So what's the story behind my new record,.Goodbye New York,Hello World?

Well pull up a chair dere' partner and let me spin you a tale of sorts..

Most folks that know me know that I was taken to task by none other than Ornette Coleman. In real time, making music together,Ornette showed me a door that led to my own music,a door that was in his own musical house. It took me 2 years to go through this door, and I have been working on what he showed me ever since. My last record, the Manifestation Drama, was during about the 35% mark of this period,as I documented my long term quartet that started as an attempt to play Latin Jazz free, but went in a different direction as time went by.At the heart of this period I formed a band to openly confront the walls I had built around myself that OC showed me.I called some of my closest collaborators:Francois Grillot on Bass,Ras Moshe on Tenor, and Bob Hubbard on drums.Sessions over the last few years led to this record. Here we go,track by track, step by step, note by note.

Rose is my new and old Cornet. She belonged to my cousin Lance, who lives here in NYC with me.It's a trip to have Blood in NYC with you.Lance is really a great guy,a devoted family man, very hard worker, and Guitar player.Rose belonged to him since the 60's,and as soon as I tried her,I knew we had to be together.Rose is an Olds ambassador cornet, and my first trumpet was an Olds.More than anything, this was a horn that was actually in my actual family, and I had to have her join the team right away. She has a bright fatness spitfire tough Love human thing happening. The track is uptempo for me and Francois doing what we do:Letting people know were ALIVE,and might even THRIVE when given that window. It's a high energy hello that is kind of like walking out into 8th ave from the port Authority Bus station. This one is dedicated to Lance.

This is the track that was behind the whole session. It's for OC,and its as Harmelodic as I'll ever get. After the melody I attempt the longest solo of my life, and my favorite tempo with Francois and Bob playing just about perfect for me.The interaction level is so high I just cant get over it.I have never felt so at home.At times the bass clarinet slips away from me,but I loved the music so much,I had to put it out.I asked Bob and Francois to follow me,and that eventually I would take it OUT.When the moment came, they were ready, and I've never plotted and then achieved anything like that in my musical life.I then asked Ras to play the most aggressive music he could to create the bridge between in and out and show how we are really all the same.Ras plays one of the greatest solo's I've ever heard him play, and the contrast I was looking for came off.

What was supposed to me a Flugel improv with Francois became bookends,as I played music from an African choir without planing it,and then switched into 2 tunes I have worked on for some time, ending up on Alto Clarinet. This is my first recording with Bundy, and I believe in her,her color, her character. In the end I took an Albert vibe and made it major/minor and slowed it down,.like having Albert sit in with Duke. Then I took an OC vibe, and slowed it down as well,.just as OC has slowed down as he has gotten older. It's the most touching moment on the record. From a bigger picture,in my life I had gone through a big time ending, and then an even bigger beginning. This piece has the feelings of both times, and especially reveals just how important the new beginning is.

This is actually Live from the Stone in NYC.Another attempt to write my language and engage what my mentors say is my main horn, the flugel.I was wearing a crazy top hat when this went down, and lost the hat.Everybody got a fire going that feels just right. It had no title until Francois pointed out that it sounds just like a Wayne Shorter tune. When I saw how true this was,I had no choice but to make it a portrait of the musician we all love so much, master Wayne! A true mystical visionary,Both me and Moshe are down with WAYNE.

In Italian this means "I miss you".Sometimes the Sun,Moon,Sky,Birds,Clouds, and Tree's all get together and let you feel the seasons change in ways beyond your wildest imagination. In other words, sometimes the Soul is allowed to be itself.Cornet, with Francois.

This is the free Jazz, spiritual,of the album.Mingus writing inspired the melody,.asking me what if Albert or Trane joined Mingus band? There is mos def ANGST.The biggest challenge we face in life is standing by our choices. The one's that dictate the path of our education in this lifetime.Choices bring consequence, and part of being human is the strength to live your life and accept it based on those BIG decision's.We never get rest from them as through our lives we are asked over and over, just who we really are.At the heart of the human experience are those moments when you really try to find out but choosing a direction.Ive made choices and suffered the consequences. Some folks might say that makes me a full fledged adult at 41 years old.Full band with Bass Clarinet.

The title track. This is with gongs and the moment I discovered the sound I have been searching for on Alto Clarinet. Its SPOOKY,CREEPY,LONELY,and beyond.I felt I had discovered something very important.More than anything, this really captures the exact feeling I had when it was recorded, this music is right where I was at,and I'm really happy to have captured it.A musical life photograph. It has lyrics and an actual structure now,but this was that moment of discovery.Listening to it,the title just came to me and wouldn't let go.

Whenever I leave New York for Europe,5 times now,I see that LIFE really becomes LIFE when you escape the absolute total madness that it takes to function in NYC in 2011.My book coming out is filled with NYC,as to live here you must BECOME it.You have to have NYC in your blood to live here. This song is a remembrance of self as the toxicity fades and you remember you had a soul before New York, and that afterwords the soul Lives on.It also has the feeling of being emotionally lost.I was at this time,so I'm glad to have been found.

If you made it this far,THANKS,and even better Internet world,.if you head to CDBABY right now and COP.
