ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"MacIsaac clearly has one of the best sets of hands in the world and he uses them to their maximum ability." - Piper & Drummer Magazine (2005)

(Argyllshire Gathering Silver Medallist) Matt MacIsaac is a multi-instrumentalist performer, teacher, composer and producer who tours with renowned fiddler Natalie MacMaster, plays with the world-famous Glenfiddich Spirit Of Scotland Pipe Band (from the award-winning "On The Day" feature length documentary) and creates world-class music. "The Piping Album" was the first recording of Matt's and was received with critical acclaim. Its stark, exposed nature at a time when most other musicians in this genre were trying to be different, The Piping Album was a welcome return to the solo piping styles of the 80s and 90s. Recorded at the award-winning Lakewind Sound in beautiful Point Aconi, Cape Breton, engineer Mike Shepherd used no less than 6 microphones to capture the complete sound of the Great Highland Bagpipe, immersing the listener in an embracing soundscape of immaculately tuned drones and chanter, played with clarity and style.

Notes on Matt's compositions:

Lynn Sutherland - A 4-part hornpipe written in memory of Matt's 2 year old cousin, Lynn Sutherland, who sadly passed away after battling a short but lifelong illness.

Victoria Road - The street Matt lived on in the south end of Halifax while recording the album, and also where he was living when he broke his left knee and right wrist playing frisbee in Virginia. His apartment was up one flight of 20 stairs and he was on crutches for 4 months.

The Firedrill - When Matt was 18 he won the Argyllshire Gathering Silver Medal in Oban, Scotland. During his performance a loud crash (still a mystery) occurred followed by a ringing fire bell in the auditorium where the competition was held. He played through, unaware of the fact that the competition stewards had tried to interrupt the performance but were waved off by the judges, who probably just wanted to see if he'd make it to the end!
