ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
In the entrepreneurial vein of her ancestors, Arizona singer/songwriter/guitarist Meagan Gipson has created Grand Canyon Project about her five generations of AZ history, her great-great grandparents pioneers of Grand Canyon tourism.

You can just imagine the Grand Canyon back in the late 1800’s, the pioneering that took place to bring some of the first tourists in for an experience they’d never forget. Tourists from across the globe were introduced to one of the Seven Wonders of the World including President Taft, silent film star Mary Pickford and author George Wharton James. They needed guides to take them down the dusty trails, some developed by a man named William Wallace Bass and who better to guide them than W.W. himself alongside his wife, Ada Bass. William and Ada played heavy roles in the creation of tourism at the Grand Canyon and today, five generations later, their great-great granddaughter is here to sing about it! Take in her stories as she takes you back in time to a place, a world far removed from today. Her album 100 Years Away colorizes the stories, letters, struggles and successes of her ancestors. The music grips the dusty path and leads the listener, allowing them to take their own interactive tour through a facet of the Grand Canyon’s rich and thick history.

Meagan Gipson is a fifth generation Arizonan with an extensive musical background spanning more than twenty-five years. Meagan writes all original material, plays guitar, sings and incorporates other instruments. Her style has been greatly inspired and influenced by Sheryl Crow; it reflects elements similar to those of Stevie Nicks, Chris Isaak, Melissa Etheridge, Jewel and Keith Whitley as well. Her writing settles in on universal truths and focuses on topics of strength, independence, longing, and of course, that age old standard…love.

Meagan has been performing for the last fifteen years at coffeehouses, clubs, restaurants and events including Famous Sam’s Bar & Grill and Coffee Plantation. She has also played in numerous benefit concerts and opened for the band Betty, known for their songs on HBO's series "Encyclopedia", at a cancer benefit at Alice Cooper’sTown. Meagan has performed at awareness events for her alma mater, Arizona State University, including Take Back the Night and Women of Juarez and special events with former news anchors.

Highlights include a pre-Fleetwood Mac concert performance in the Platinum Club at US Airways Center for the $1000 benefactors hosted by the Arizona Heart Institute Foundation. Several years later, the AHIF hosted a Stevie Nicks benefit show at Comerica Theatre where she was invited back to perform pre-concert. She played at their benefit golf tournament and Meagan was also the guest performer at the dedication of the newest building addition to the Arizona Heart Hospital Campus in which Stevie Nicks was Guest of Honor.

Meagan has been a longtime supporter of causes and active in the community. Her efforts include organizing and directing music-driven benefits for foundations in Phoenix, the Valley of the Sun. She also actively engages her following in animal rescue, fostering and adoption efforts.

Most recently, the Arizona native has created Grand Canyon Project. Under the umbrella of GCP, she has developed a multi-sensory, music-driven performance series based on her rich and extensive family history rooted at the Grand Canyon. Her great-great-grandparents played heavy roles in the creation of early tourism at the Grand Canyon as well as being writers and musicians themselves. She introduced Grand Canyon Project, performing at the Sunnyslope Historical Society in Phoenix, Arizona. You can find her bringing their lives and Arizona’s past to light as she tells their stories as well as her other ancestors’ stories through a multi-sensory, musical journey. Through GCP, her album 100 Years Away highlights the splendor and ever-changing tide of their world. She has developed a line of products that pay tribute to her family's deep roots and lasting contributions to the development of Grand Canyon tourism and the awareness of one of the most splendid places on Earth.
