ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
When Steve Meckfessel fires up his Collings slope-shouldered dreadnaught guitar with its sunburst tobacco finish, people turn and listen. With its evocative chord progressions, haunting melodies and unadorned lyrics, Steve’s music reminds us of what we may have given up for lost.
With his music described as “jazz inflected, urban folk”, this singer and original song-writer will pick and sing his way into your heart.

The hour was late, the mood was soft and vulnerable, and the waves along the California coast were providing a wash of hypnotic rhythms as Steve began to play "As Long as He's Gone." At that moment, I found myself being gently transported back to another place and time -- completely immersed in this tragically beautiful song set to Steve's earthy, almost whispering and sometimes raspy voice. We were both taking part in an intimate songwriter's circle that night, and I was supposed to go next!

I can not stop playing this album. If it were on vinyl, the grooves would be in danger of being worn smooth. And, I feel so fortunate to have been able to hear each of its songs as they were written -- with just a voice and a guitar....just.

under beautiful skies
Musically wonderful collection of heart-felt songs that, on more than one occasion, brought some flow to the old tear ducts. How can you NOT be touched hearing "As Long as He's Gone" knowing the draft age during the Civil war was 14 years old? Steve has got it right on this music! Wonderful harmonies and fabulous backup by his group of talent. Let's see - a song written for your mother on her birthday? (Mama's Boy) Puuleeeeze! Hand me the box of tissues! This stuff is great!
