Album Notes

"Dream Pop: The quintet Medea plays dreamy, elegant pop highlighted by the burnished alto of lead singer Irene Lambrou.." --The Philadelphia Inquirer

"Fronted by the throaty, dramatic thrush Irene Lambrou, Medea will put a spell on you with their dreamy music - a prog-rock style I'd dub "goth-elegant." Check out "Purgatory," "Lay Down with the Enemy" and "Inside" as primo examples. In the mix, too, are some cool operator jazz pop numbers - "Walking on Coals" and "Thaw." Lush keyboard flourishes, buzzy Jorma Kaukonen-style guitar and a slick rhythm section add to a production sheen so finessed a major label could put this set out with pride. Fans of classically-influenced popsters such as October Project, (early) King Crimson and Renaissance will like 'em. So, too, will devotees of Heart, Indigo Girls and Sade. Grade: A"--Philadelphia Daily News

"Philadelphia's Medea, a rock band with a flair for the mystifying, is bewitching. This is a band of highly talented individuals who work together as one, creating a sound that is much more than simply "unique", it is mesmerizing.

As you listen to "Dreams and Revelations", the debut release of Medea, you quickly realize that you are completely under their control. The lyrics, the harmony and especially the vocalization capture your attention as nothing you have ever experienced before. Irene Lambrou, the lead singer of Medea, is a rare discovery. Her talent literally glides off of each track. She is the storyteller, and in her highly adept hands the lyrics come alive, enlightening all senses. Supported by a band of extremely clever musicians, Ms. Lambrou shines in a way that is seldom seen. By the end of the CD, you are brought to the inimitable realization that you have just experienced something very special indeed.

The music retains its energy through all eleven tracks, never faltering. Surface of the Sun, the opening track, is an evocative tune of passion, and with Irene's potent delivery, the heat from this song definitely seems to grow hotter than the burning sun. Lay Down With the Enemy is a prime example of how Medea uses their musical aptitude to its height, formulating a song that carries you to different emotional levels. The song is simultaneously poignant and submissive. The Tower is a perfect musical illustration of Medea's vigor, successfully blending the world of what is known with the universe of the unknown, yet the song is not pretentious as some tunes of this nature tend to be (Thanks in no small part to some splendid work by the band)

The mythological story of Medea relates a sharp, cunning sorceress who uses her powers of control to get exactly what she wants. While the ends of Pennsylvania's Medea are certainly more innocent, their means are nonetheless reflective of their Greek counterpart. With a stunning sound and brilliant vocals, you will quickly find yourself under the command of Medea. It is a hypnotic state you will invite with open arms!"

"Irene is a captivating vocalist. Her sultry vocals heat the music to a passionate degree. The musicians ride her waves creating an album rich in dynamics."
--Songwriter's Monthly

"I'm in love! Everything is perfect, from the sleepy piano runs to the casual jazz percussion and bass...Irene has a hypnotic and above all, beautiful voice. She's dead on pitch with brilliant execution...She can cover the highs and lows without flaw."

"[T]heir songs evoke a more ethereal feel with a progressive edge...McKeown's soft rolls on the snare and butterfly wing taps on the ride in the valley and thundering floor tom rolls with lightning crack crashes overhead. Lambrou's silky vocals glide over each peak and cascade into the forest floor like a misty spiritual visit from the dreamworld...Robinson brings flight to the music as a hawk riding the thermals, high coasting rides with wings outstretched into twisting dives for prey...Marrazzo weaves cello-like fretless waterflow over riverstones which at times allows a little whitewater to appear...[With] refreshing uniqueness...Longing, frustration, discovery and pontification alike live here."

"Lambrou's rich colorful singing voice works powerfully with Robinson's carefully constructed chord progressions and the rest of the band's polished musicianship."
--Legal Intelligencer

"While most Americans were watching the Republicans coronate yet another King of Mediocrity, this humble citizen was 40 miles north of the Convention, taking in an extraordinary showing of something the Republicans have long since lost - real honest-to-god soul. . .Yes, some would call it progressive rock, but that is a term best left to people who never finished their dissertations and have too many words swimming in their brain that never made it to the page. . . Soul Music - the thing that climbs right inside you and shakes the rafters of your spirit. . . And that's what Medea is all about. Soul. The music is first rate - chops a'plenty in this band. Melodies and harmonies. . . This band features first rate musicians and great original music. And then there is the singer. What a voice. I can't say anything else about it. You just have to hear it for yourself. Power and grace - a killer combination. Medea is a character from mythology - a sorceress who loved Jason (of the Argonauts). An interesting story, the tale of the sorceress. But there is nothing mythical about this Medea. Just gritty reality scored wonderfully. Call it progressive rock, call it soul - just call me when they play again."
