Album Notes
Melissa Boyce is all about music. This Canadian girl hails from Nanaimo, B.C. but now resides in Toronto.

With a jazz pianist father, Melissa grew up in a home full of music and developed a keen appreciation for a wide variety of music genres: Classical, R&B, Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz! Some of her greatest music influences include: Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Billie Holliday, Etta James and of course, her dad Norbert Boyce.

When it comes to singing Melissa’s first love is jazz, but her diverse musical base allows her to embrace R&B, Pop and Rock with ease.

She has appeared numerous clubs around Toronto including The Montréal Bistro and Jazz Club, Top of the Senator, The Muse Bistro, The Bamboo, The Mockingbird, Liberty Grand, Trane Studio (with New York’s Damian Paone Quartet), Healeys (with Jeff Healey) and The Rex Hotel, as well as Ottawa’s Fairmont Chateau Laurier. She has also performed at The Kingston Jazz Festival, Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival, the Distillery Jazz Festival and the Roselawn Jazz Series.

Melissa has been invited to sing for several dignitaries including the Prime Minister of Canada, Supreme Court Judges and Provincial Chiefs of Police.

Melissa has been expertly accompanied by some of Toronto finest jazz musicians including Ron Davis, Drew Birston, Kevin Laliberté, Tony Quarrington, Reg Schwager and Kevin Barrett.

In 2005 Melissa celebrated the release of her debut CD “Teach Me Tonight.” Accompanying her in this project were Kevin Laliberté on guitar, Drew Birston on bass, Davide Direnzo on percussion and Norbert Boyce on keyboard.

Apart from public appearances Melissa Boyce often does voice-over work for radio productions.

“Whether it be a steamy summer’s night… perhaps watching through the window, the soft rain on a spring or autumn day… or velvet snowflakes falling within the wind of a winter interlude - Make sure of two things… you have someone you love beside you and the debut CD of Melissa Boyce called Teach Me Tonight to listen to.

A brilliant new jazz talent has arrived and like the seasons you don’t want to miss her. Among the tracks experience Gershwin’s “Summertime” like you’ve never heard it done before.” (John Donabie, Broadcaster, Musicologist)

Melissa Boyce: honest, clear, clean, sensual lyrics and sound
No electronic enhancements here. Just honest sounds. Good, clean, clear honest voice. Great jazz favourites.

Dazzling vocals, terrific backup = Fabulous CD!
This is one exceptional CD; highly recommended!

Melissa Boyce’s vocals are strong and clear, and her English enunciation is virtually perfect. I understand every word she sings. I love it!

The songs are not overly orchestrated, and the arrangements make these jazz standards truly unique and fresh sounding. Melissa’s back up is outstanding, and in no way over powering. There’s a good balance between the band and Melissa.

Give this CD a try; Melissa Boyce and Co. will not disappoint.

I heard a couple of delicious tracks from this album on the radio and decided to pick up the album & check out the rest. I have to say, Ms Boyce does not disappoint! Her phrasing, timing, all spectacular. While every track on this album is well known to me, Melissa's spin on these songs takes them to a whole new level of WOW! Way to go! When does the next album come out?

Melissa Boyce is a breath of fresh air in contemporary Jazz...
The Teach Me Tonight CD by Melissa Boyce is a highly enjoyable compilation of Jazz pieces by a superb vocalist. For a first professional album this is a rare accomplishment - this album needs to be listened to and enjoyed by Jazz aficionados and neophytes alike. Give it all the air time it needs and the alcolades it deserves! I am looking forward to future releases by this talented jazz interpreter.

teach me tonight
I love your "Baby Baby all the time" so much I sing it your way to myself all day. Your "teach me" is hot and steamy and brightens up my day in that special "summer saturday" way that only jazz can, regardless of when I hear your voice!
