Musical History
Melissa Sweet has been singing her whole life. She began piano lessons at age 8 and studied for 5 years. At age 11 she was asked by Reverend Robert Schuller to join the adult choir at the Garden Grove Community Church in Orange County, California (which later became the Crystal Cathedral). She sang in adult choirs from that time on, played piano, and learned guitar. She was in her school and church choirs every year, and her high school choir was so skilled and proficient that they regularly placed first or second in the annual California State Choir Festival. Melissa joined the Orange County cast of Up With People in 1968 as a singer, guitarist, and tambourine player. She performed with them through May 1970 and was invited to sing with the Up With People national cast on their album, recorded in Los Angeles, where she was the youngest singer in the group.
In 1969 Melissa began receiving requests to sing background vocals on albums by local musicians and bands, and spent several years doing studio work. In 1972 she became a student at Yoga Center of California, which changed her life and her relationship with music. During this period she was able to develop her natural abilities as a percussionist, learning to play everything from tablas, mridangas, and other Indian drums to congas and most any hand percussion instrument. In 1977 she joined with Kim Palmer (Thakurvadini) and Robin Richardson (Nanda) to form the group Lila, whose ground-breaking 1978 album paved the way for “yoga music” and devotional artists to follow. Her recording career tapered off during the next several years as she raised her family, but she continued to perform — mainly at Yoga Center — and composed more than 200 songs during this period. And she did some occasional studio work as well, recording and co-producing work for friends.
We hope you enjoy this music and that it inspires and uplifts all who hear it. Additional recording projects for Sweet Soul Music are in the planning stages, so look for new songs in the near future.

After years of requests by friends and family to record her own material, in March 2018 Melissa asked some Yoga Center friends to learn some of her songs for this project and they began recording Songs to the Divine in June 2018. Because this music has been directly inspired by Spirit, Melissa wanted musicians who strive to live each day in Spirit to join her in this endeavor, and who could approach it as the offering it has been from the start. We feel this devotion comes through and can clearly be heard on every song. Each of these friends is an excellent musician… and each of them is a super-nice person!
• Ron Anderson (Mitra): 12-string guitar, harp, vocals. Mitra has a lovely bass voice and plays several kinds of harp, including pedal harp as included in orchestras. He also plays guitar and 12-string guitar and has added his talents to many a performance since the 1970s.
• George Martinovich (Atmabodha): bass guitars, vocals. Atmabodha is originally from Hungary where he was bass player in a number of successful Hungarian and European rock bands. In fact, he is featured in the Hungarian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Budapest. After coming to California he has played non-stop in local bands, raising his family and making a living as a bass player.
• Masako Popick (Riti): piano, vocals. Riti is originally from Japan and is a trained pianist. She has sung and played keyboards and percussion in a number of local bands, including her family band. Her knowledge of music theory and her notation skills made this project much easier.
• Kevin Yoches: trap drums. Kevin is Larry and Melissa’s godson and is like a member of our family. We’ve known him since conception and have watched with pride as he learned drums in the high school band, studied music theory at the college level, and went on to play for several local rock bands to great acclaim.
• Vladana Zorjan-Stubbs (Kshanti): flute, vocals. Kshanti is originally from Serbia, where she learned piano and guitar and where she played flute in orchestras and smaller ensembles. She has entered and won musical competitions in Europe and now works as a licensed music therapist.
• Melissa Sweet (Sati devi): guitars, hand drums and percussion, synthesized instruments, autoharp, tamboura, lead vocals and harmonies. Eh… you’ve heard enough about her!
• Asaf Fulks: Recording Engineer, OC Recording Studio (full service music production and distribution) https://ocrecording.com. Many thanks to Asaf for his outstanding musical sensitivity, his mastery of digital recording and production techniques, and his experienced guidance throughout this project. I interviewed 4-5 Orange County recording studios and found that Asaf had what was needed to bring this album to fruition. He immediately recognized that this music was different from that of his usual clients — he was eager to tackle this project and was very encouraging from the start.
