Album Notes
Many 12th-18th century Advent and Christmas texts focus on the star in the east. The morning star is symbolic of Christ’s arrival, and encourages Christians to look eastward to his birthplace. In recent years Melos has been exploring ancient Christmas music from different eastern traditions because it resonates with the ancient “roots” music of our western tradition. Early music offers a refuge from the hectic pace and pressures that go with the busy Christmas season. With this music and its texts we enter the world of the powerful symbols with which our ancestors engaged so passionately.
