ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Meredith Kaunitz and Jonathon Lynch teamed up to make this dynamic album.

Meredith Kaunitz is a seasoned Arts Integrator and Performing Artist. As a language teacher, I always knew that music helps people remember language. The rhythm and intonation that is inherent in all languages is also inherent in all music. In fact, music has been used to pass down not just language but history and belief system stories since the beginning of time. So it was no surprise that I started singing to my child from his first moments. Watching my child soak up the information presented in these songs was so exciting that I started making up songs about everything and anything we encountered all day long. I used them to get him to focus on following directions, to introduce a new activity and to point out something new about the world. We danced as we sang from his first days because I knew from my time teaching English conversation in Japan that physical response to language is another way to make it easier to acquire language. We danced to every kind of music from the a cappella songs I sang every day to recorded music in every genre. It was so fun to see how he reacted to each song and each style instinctively even as a newborn!

By the time he was up and around, I was developing my first infant enrichment class to help other caregivers in my community learn baby sign the same way I had taught us. I put together a class using the same traditional songs, stories, chants, rhymes and developmental activities that I had done with my baby. Everybody loved it! So I started adding more kinds of classes and soon my child was in school full time and I had a full slate off 15 different subjects that I teach all using some kind of art or hands-on experiential activity. Then one of my student's parents asked me for a Spanish class. So I started thinking about it. How would I teach the under 4 crowd to speak Spanish? My brain came up with the answer as I tried to sleep. Most nights I had to get up in the middle of the night to write down the lyrics so I could shut it down and get some sleep! The next thing I knew I had a full slate of songs that taught basic Spanish vocabulary. I imbedded these songs into lesson plans not just for babies but for 3-6 year olds, 5-10 year olds and even my Teens class. It was working.

I wanted to share these songs with the world but I knew I needed someone who could create fully orchestrated instrumentals to fill out the songs and make them real music. That's when I found Jonathon.

Jonathon Lynch is a composer who works out of NYC. He had just the background I was looking for. I sent him my a cappella songs and he sent me this amazing music that worked with it to tell the musical story in each and every case. Working with Jonathon on this project was exactly like being in the perfect improv scene where everybody on stage is listening to each other, accepting each others ideas, building on them and connecting with each other and the audience to tell a coherent story. Each song has its own flavor, its own style, and its own combination of instruments. He made this album pop and I am truly grateful!

Next I took these compositions to Songbuilder Studios in Catonsville, MD where I met Stephen Antonelli. Steve took our work and brought it to the next level. He engineered; he edited; he polished. He was amazing to work with. I am so excited that we were able to bring this music to you so that you can enjoy it with your children or students or friends and family. Enjoy!

If you would like a copy of the lyrics book once you have purchased either a download or a CD, please find my Etsy store "ArtPlayLearn". Send me a message and I'd be happy to arrange to get you a copy. It has not just the Spanish lyrics but also the English translations.
