So Sure

by Meryl Romer

Meryl sings with a warm sensuality and heart-shuddering vibrato. Her sophistication and playfulness couples with her band's pulsing modern arrangements of jazz standards, original songs, and a Bob Dylan tune.

Album Notes
I’ve often said that I have been singing these songs my whole life…I just never opened my mouth. I began whispering lyrics and humming distant strands of melody when I was 11 years old. Finding my voice and gathering the courage to allow my private sounds to emerge and become “singing” wouldn’t come until forty years later.

So, at the age of 51, I chose to immerse myself in the world of Jazz. Stepping into this style of music felt so natural to me, I knew, I was never turning back.

The feelings these songs elicit from me conjure shapes and sounds that tell stories that resonate with my own. Songs are like trying on tailored dresses. Some are like jeweled gowns. Some tell my story and others allow me to embody imagined, dreamt of characters.

The music reveals the yearnings of my heart and soul. I hope these songs speak to yours.

So Sure
I initially heard about this CD from a friend and was eager to listen to it. I began with a few clips on the website and as soon as possible bought the CD. What a treat for me and everyone I've played it for! In fact, my father loved it so much, he took my copy with him on a roadtrip. Meryl's voice and interpretation of the songs feels so genuine and heartfelt; it's obvious that she loves to sing and to share song with her listeners. Her voice is uniquely her own --at times sultry and mysterious, at others playful, but always engaging; the instrumentals are without equal, and the arrangements convey a revealing sense of the artist while retaining the integrity of the songs. The originals on the CD are not to be missed. I know we'll be hearing a lot more from Meryl in the future. I look forward to watching her perform because I have the feeling that she embraces her music magically in a live performance. I recommend that everyone give this CD a chance; you'll be clamoring for more!

So Sure
This first effort by Meryl Romer is filled with heart, warmth and vulnerability, as well as a wonderful voice. Meryl embodies these tunes and takes great chances with bold arrangements of classics and very interesting choices in covering "Solomon Sang" and "Your a Big Boy Now". Meryl's voice carries through a width of styles, propelled by a top notch group of musicians, amongst whom she shines through. "So Sure" is a jewel of a first effort and makes me glad to anticipate what may come next.
