Album Notes
mg4 (The Mike Garrigan Band) is a 4 member original rock band hailing form Greensboro, NC.

When front man Mike Garrigan was recently asked what his band is all about, he replied "Pretend Michael Stipe of R.E.M. put on about twenty pounds of raw muscle and fronted Toad the Wet Sprocket. That's what we sound like."

Consisting of Mike Garrigan (vocals/guitars), Mark Kano (guitars/vocals), Jeremy Cannon (drums), and Mike Mitschele (bass), it's not hard to see why mg4 might be one of the best original bands currently performing in the Carolinas. The band has a brilliant history together. They toured together under the leadership of Mark Kano as the 11th hour line up for the Greensboro based band Athenaeum, who in 1998 had a Top Ten Billboard Modern Rock Hit with the song "What I Didn't Know."

Individually, the members boast quite impressive resumes. Mike Garrigan fronted the band Collapsis who in 2000 reached #28 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart with the song "Automatic." Jeremy Cannon has played drums for numerous notable bands including Tonic and The Connells. Mike Mitshele, or Big Mike as he's known, played bass for the band Jolene and is involved in several different projects including Film School and The Alternative Champs.

Great CD, leaves you wanting more!
Great CD that leaves you wanting a full size one. I've never understood why singer/guitarist Mike Garrigan's early work (Collapsis - Dirty Wake CD) wasn't a huge hit. Guitarist/vocalist Mark Kano's former band Athenaeum's self titled CD is another gem that you've probably never heard of. Hopefully they will have the success they deserve as these two talented artists join forces as MG4.

Great CD. I'm so glad I was able to get it. I've always said to anybody that will listen, Garrigan and Kano IMHO have the talent to actually change Music....I mean as in a Beatles/Rolling Stones/Zepplin way....

That may sound crazy...but I honestly belive that. Their 4 previous albums will be favorites in my large music collection until the day I die. Right along side those bands I mentioned.

forget all comparisons
I was first introduced to Mike's material from an old friend in the industry, Andy Martin. This was just before Collapsis signed with Universal, well before the bands demise. Major label politics had a lot to do with the difference between what happened to Collapsis and what could have come of Mike and Co.
I've decided that Collapsis and the works that followed were enough for me to follow Mike's career, as I find his honesty and musical integrity hard to come by elsewhere.
MG4 is a very short offering of hopefully even better things to come. One things for sure, Mike Garrigan will continue to offer some of the most compelling life stories put to song, and it certainly doesn't hurt to have Kano alongside.

Its a no-brainer to buy this...
When the only complaint about a CD is that its too short, you know you're in good company. And since this IS an EP, we cant fault the length. 4 great songs from an artist who rarely offers anything less. While I would recommend "The Lessons of Autumn" first and foremost to someone unfamiliar with Mike, I see no reason why you couldnt start here either. A great disc that is perfect to add to (or start) your collection of MGs work...

Four tracks of pure original rock
The debut CD from the up-and-coming Mike Garrigan Band (mg4) is a great glimpse of a band that is sure to become a huge success. The Gravity Affects Me EP consists of four pure original rock tracks with their own unique flavor.

Another Day in Paradise - The most radio-friendly song on the disc is a mantra for being happy with the changes you have made in your life. This track features an upbeat tempo and a very full sound.

Walk in Circles - A powerful, and much darker, song with a killer chorus, this track is also the first look into Mike Garrigan's penchant for intelligent lyrics such as, “Until my mind has played enough games of blind empiricals”.

Gravity Affects Me – The title track of the EP has been a long-time fan favorite, but is making its commercial debut. This recording can best be described as “intense”: the guitars are thick, the drums are heavy and the imagery is full.

Run from Thunder – The EP closes with another uplift song, creating a comfortable balance with the heavier middle tracks. This song has some similar themes to “Another Day in Paradise”: getting through whatever is holding you down and making a fresh climb. “Mother River, wash me over and be done. I’ve taken all that I can.” This song also gives listeners an introduction to Garrigan’s taste for literary allusions, with subtle references to James Joyce’s “Finnigan’s Wake” and T. S. Eliot’s “The Wasteland”.

This four-track CD gives a quick preview of what is to come from this NC rock band. All four songs are engaging and emotional. I promise you will be singing along quickly, and will fall in love with this band’s unique sound.

Michael from Germany

fantastic debut ....
"gravity affects me" is the fantastic debut from The Mike Garrigan Band. Mike Garrigan is one of those few musicians who can write songs that will stuck in your head for a long long time. And the four songs on this EP are exactly that kind of songs. In every song you can hear and feel the energy and passion this band has.

Backed by Mark Kano(Athenaeum), Mike Mitshele(Jolene,Athenaeum) and Jeremy Cannon(The Connells,Tonic,Athenaeum) it's no wonder why this band might be one of the most promising bands out there.

Buy this cd's worth every cent you spend on it.

Worth Gravity's Effects!!
I admit it, I am biased. I was prepared to love this EP even before I heard it. I have liked everyhting that Mike Garrigan has touched that I have heard and was sure that I would not be disapointed. I wasn't. Like a Hall of Famer in the World Series, the MG4 goes 4 for 4 with a great sampling of what they have to offer. My only complaint is that it is only 4 songs! Songs like "Walk in Circles" and "Run from Thunder" were new to me, but boy oh boy, if this is the direction that the band is going. . .I want more! Do yourself a favor, pick up a copy of this ep and let it effect you.

Athenaeum / Collapsis quality
Mike Garrigan & Friends' excellent mini project. Catchy acoustic rock songs that won't leave you. "Another day in paradise" has to be a (hit)single. The title track is at the same level, as the other two songs fit perfectly on this EP. The only downside is the fact that there are only are 4 songs on the disc, but who cares, give Mike Garrigan's "The promise of summer" a spin afterwards !
