ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Mia Miata has taken the rich influence and textures of Jazz, R&B, Soul, and traditional Negro Spirituals, and cultivated a rich style known as Jazzy Soul. Jazzy Soul can be described as a fusion of Soul under the strong influence of traditional jazz.

Many say, Mia has created a unique and rich resonance that compares with the likes of Jill Scott, Sade, Nina Simone, and Phyllis Hyman. The debut independent release, Urban Arias is a tapestry woven between 15 original tracks, and an interpretation of the Negro Spiritual Lord, "How Come Me Here" newly entitled "Urban Aria". Mia wrote, produced / co-produced her entire album.

Mia's rich soprano ranges over 3 octaves. Her credibility stands from a background of classical training at the Baltimore School for the Arts in Vocal Performance. In addition to that, Mia worked with Dr. Nathan Carter and the highly acclaimed vocal trainer Betty Ridgeway where she performed with the world class Morgan State University Choir. Additional performances at Morgan State University would include, singing with the Philadelphia Philharmonic, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Bonn Orchestra in Bonn Germany .

In a conversation with Mia, she gave a brief explanation of her project. "Urban Aria's are the unsung songs of the people of the African Diaspora. Jazz is the classical musical genre of the America 's. It is the foundation from which all other genres originate. I wanted to use heavy percussion, bass, flute, vibraphone, flamenco guitar, and saxophone to help narrate my lyrics".

When asked the question, What inspired your style as an artist?" Mia goes to say, "I wanted to incorporate the traditional with the non-traditional. I view music as a journey and an therapeutic experience, and at I want to take my listeners to places not found in music today. From the instrumentation o the lyrical content, I want my music to be the ultimate experience." Jazz is relative, Jazz is a state of mind, Jazz is a way of life and Music Is ...my religion.

Spiritual and Sensual!!!!
Mia Miata isn't a jack of all trades--She's a Master! How many people can combine jazz, soul, gospel, and classical without sounding disjointed and erratic? How many singers can touch on religious and historical subjects without coming across as preachy and boring? Anyway, Mia Miata pulls everything off with beauty, grace, and aplomb. Never once does she falter and each track is as pleasurable to listen to as the one that precedes it. More than anyone, she keeps it real and reaches for the sky at the same time.
Mia is truly transcendent.

B'more's own Mia Miata.
"Music Is," a mostly instrumental number by Baltimore's Mia Miata, rightfully closes the set. Over a bed of exotic percussion enlivened by serpentine tenor sax lines, she sings-chants, "Music is my religion/Music is my therapy/Music is my inspiration ..."

And I'm feelin' every word.

Splendid and beautiful soul music!
What has your soul music done for you lately? I hope it continues to enhance your drive and zest for life. Mia Miata's "Urban Arias" duly compliments the cherished intangibles of love, freedom, and expression. The album is a gem replete with expert production and deep lyrical prose.

I caught Mia's vibe while cruising one day and listening to XM Satellite Radio. The track "Music Is" immediately garnered my attention and I began my quest to find out more about this talented woman. She hails from Baltimore, MD and is part of music label Tha Corporation. (Kendall Leonard is also on this label!) Mia's vocals are powerful and through her music, she presents with grace and aplomb.

If your soul collection is in need of upgrading then don't sleep on Urban Arias. Sample the sound samples and take note of the reviews. The word about Mia is spreading and her vibe is a timeless treasure. Here at the DJ Consortium offices, this cd is on "heavy rotation."

The potential of …Urban Arias reaches far beyond the boundaries of contemporary “Urban” music as you’ll hear percussion, bass, flute, guitar; saxophone paired to Miata’s classically trained vocal range. You’ll also hear remnants of Natalie Cole, Jill Scott, and Oleta Adams and even a little Nina Simone, yet there’s a unique richness and depth infused in each track which bares no resemblance to these preceding legends. Miata’s “Jazzy Soul” is a new desperately long awaited sound...

JAZZ REVIEW

Mia takes listeners on a jazz activated spiritual energy experience, one that is
One such artist who fits into the realm of intuitive creativity is Mia Miata. Her debut release entitled 'Urban Arias' is a multi-faceted journey through contemporary jazz, music that was often heard during the 1970s. With skill and determination, Mia takes listeners on a jazz activated spiritual energy experience, one that is filled with the influences of neo soul, R&B, gospel and jazz. .
