Album Notes
Michael Dirk is an active performer, clinician, adjudicator, conductor, and composer-arranger. Michael has been invited to perform at the 2008 Association of Anglican Musicians conference, the 2010 Royal Canadian College of Organists’ Pipes around the Pacific International Convention, and in the 2010 Olympic organ recital series.

Born in Kelowna, BC, Michael Dirk began his piano studies at age six with Carl Montgomery, at the Langley Community Music School. Following secondary school, he studied under Ed Norman and Denis Bédard, while enrolled at UBC. There, he performed with the UBC choirs and orchestras before travelling to Europe to study the Cavaille-Coll organs in Paris, which included playing at Blenheim Palace (UK) and at the St. Thomaskirche (Germany). Following his UBC B.Mus graduation, Michael released his OrganBlaster! CD and then left for Texas, in 2005. In 2009, Michael graduated from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University (Houston, Texas) with a Masters of Music in Organ Performance, where he was in the final class of Clyde Holloway, who appointed him graduate assistant. He has won numerous awards and scholarships and performed with members of the VSO, VMO, and Vancouver Opera, as well as with the New Westminster Police and SFU Pipe Bands.

As conductor, Michael studied under Bruce Pullan, Bob Simpson, Christie Marceleru and Dr. Scott Goble. With Australian soprano Susan Dunn, he studied voice. Michael has served as Music Director to congregations at Faith Lutheran, in Surrey, BC, Zion Lutheran in Tomball, TX, and the Tzu-Chi Foundation Children’s chorus, in addition to three seasons with the Rice Light Opera Society. Upon returning home from Texas, he spent his first season with the UBC Gilbert & Sullivan Society, and he is now preparing his second show with them (“HMS Pinafore“).

As clinician for Carillon Music’s annual Church Musician’s Summer Institute, Michael has conducted a number of intensive programs for church pianists becoming organists, right where Michael first started at age twelve.

As he continues studies at UBC (B.Ed) he remains in demand as a recitalist and organ clinician.
