Album Notes
Michael has been writing Christian music since he learned to play the guitar in the 1980s. Friends say his music touches something deep inside, bringing peace or a challenge to get closer to the Lord Jesus. Some of these songs may bring tears, while others will inspire you to raise your hands and sing along. The album includes a few performance tracks so you can share them easily, or just enjoy them without the lead vocal. You'll also hear a little Chinese in some cuts--as explained below.

People say Michael's music reminds them of Jim Cole and Michael Card (who was actually Michael's teacher for a few weeks in graduate school!). His favorite singers include Card and Cole, as well as Keith Green, Rich Mullins, Steven Curtis Chapman and Don Francisco--and you might find elements reminiscent of each in the music.

In 2000, Michael and his family moved to Shanghai, China, to teach English. There, he teamed up with talented musicians from many nations to share these inspirational songs at the international church. Friends and visitors kept asking for copies of the music, and thus the dream was born to record an album in 2002.

The international team included Serena (Singapore) on keyboards, Miki (Tanzania) on bass, Keizo (Japan) on guitar, Apollo (Hong Kong) on violin, Cherry (China) on erhu, and Dwayne (Canada) on drums/percussion. Dwanye Engh produced the album, spending countless hours with Michael to get the sound right, and even to organize a choir (including Lynley, Lily, Denise, Elizabeth and Eric, from Canada, Indonesia, the Bahamas, England and Rwanda respectively). Lynley and Cherry also added some remarkable solo/duet work. It was a labor of love, as a dozen musically talented friends practiced and performed to give praise to "the One who makes us one" [from the song "One Church"] and to bring this dream to pass. The project was far more expensive and time-consuming than anyone had dreamed, but it was also a lot of fun. Most of the songs even turned out very nice—considering that we were all a bunch of amateurs!

In the years since its release, people have shared meaningful songs with friends, and Michael has continued to sing (in other parts of China and the US), so there has been a constant trickle of requests for the music to become available on line (hence it is now available here for purchase).

Michael says: "I marvel at the impact of these songs, and I am constantly encouraged to know that our friends have been inspired by the songs the Heavenly Father gives me. William Carey once said 'Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.' Being a 'recording artist' is definitely out of my comfort zone, but I think we would all be amazed at what happens if we stepped out in faith more often! As the song 'Chosen Instruments' says, though I feel far from worthy to 'join in His song,' it is an awesome 'joy to see what He does through me.' May this music give YOU the courage and strength to step out in faith, finding that same joy in your own response to that still, small voice of Heaven within us.”

You can find out more about Michael and his family at the Krigline's website (just Google the name!). There, you'll also find contact info and a way to get the lyrics/chords.

A word about the "Chinese" parts: if you speak multiple languages, you know that poetry is not easy to translate. Nonetheless, a few of the choruses have been recorded in both English and Chinese, because the Shanghai International Church liked to sing them that way. Michael friend Jin Lei help translate the title track in it's entirety, and Cherry Chen does a beautiful job helping Michael sing it in Chinese, while the choir joins him in English. The song list below shows which songs have Chinese elements.

And just in case you are wondering about Michael's version of the ancient Chinese poem "Jing Ye Si", let's just say that this "classic" has been wildly popular among Michael's students! (Read more on the web.) Here are the words in Chinese and English:

"Jing Ye Si 静夜思" 李白 (poem by Li Bai, 701-762AD; music by Michael Krigline)
床前明月光, 疑是地上霜.举头望明月,低头思故乡.

"Reminiscence in a Quiet Night" (translation by Jin Lei)
Silver moonlight spread alongside my couch. That confused me as frozen dew.
Raising my head I saw the bright moon hanging in the sky.
Bowing my head I reminisced about my home far away.

Album Song List (with short descriptions):
1. Earthen Vessels [Follow a lump of clay as he waits to be molded or re-molded into a ceramic piece worth of his creator's seal.]
2. Where is Your Jerusalem [Acts 1:8; Jesus said to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea/Samaria and to the ends of the earth--and that starts right where you live!]
3. God's Chosen Instruments [God tells the angels that He has chosen the fragile and "hard to play" over instruments of gold.]
4. Return to Me [Luke 15; The parable of the prodigal son is really about the young man's father, and this is the fathers tear-jerking love song to his wayward son.]
5. This Moment [Yesterday and tomorrow are out of reach, but we have "this moment" to live in His grace; solo by Lynley Engh,]
6. What Do You See [This is a summary of who Jesus is, and why we want to be like Him]
7. They Found Christmas [The Wise Men and Simeon "found Christmas" when they looked with all their hearts; Herod "missed Christmas" in spite of the signs; how about you?]
8. Song of the Nations [A fun "round", with a cool "popcorn" percussion section, written to help me memorize Malachi 1:11 and Rev 7:9,10.]
9. One Church [Those of us who worship in a "foreign land" have a taste of heaven, when we'll know that the One who unites us is stronger than the flags that separate us; featuring vocal support by Lynley Engh and the choir.]
10. I Want to Thank You [The result of a meditation on Colossians, created during Michael Card's class; beautiful vocals by Lynley Engh and the choir. The chorus is also in Chinese.]
11. Jing Ye Si [Li Bai's classic poem about homesickness, circa 700 AD, gets new life in this popular Chinese-style rendering; Cherry Chen provides the beautiful solo/duet support.]
12. My Life, My Love, My Lord [A simple testimony song; Michael sings both parts.]
13. You [YOU, who healed the deaf & lame, stilled the storm, and rose again--I want to hear, see, and follow Thee]
14. I'll Sing Your Praise [Inspired by the peace and grandeur of Creation, this worship anthem declares: "Source of Life and Prince of Peace, I'll never cease to sing the glories of Your Name." Chinese duet with Cherry Chen; English chorus with the choir.]

Tracks 15-22 are Performance Tracks (karaoke) that you can use to share these songs at church, or just enjoy without the lead vocal. (Permission granted to use this music freely in public/private worship, but not to record for resale. Contact info can be found at the Krigline's website.)
