Thunder and Sun

by Michael RR Wilson

This was Ian's first venture into the realm of writing after his wife dared him to do so. The symbolism is about the relationship of a couple who get together late in life and find that their previous experiences cause friction, and the joy of overcoming.

Ian played percussion since the 1960's, starting in High School and playing in various groups until 1975, when he moved to Toronto and only played occasionally until 2001 when he moved to Winnipeg following his first wife's passing. He started performing again in several groups but never considered writing until his new wife challenged him in 2015. They were in the garden, enjoying the sunshine, but could hear the thunder rolling in the distance. He turned to his wife and said what a great name for a song "Thunder and Sun". She turned to him and said " Well then why don't you write it". He decided to surprise her and started to work on it, focusing on the symbolism to the relationship, and wrote the lyrics within the week. He worked with his friend Michael Wilson to put it to music and they surprised his wife by presenting it live on stage for their tenth anniversary. That version is on youtube as "Thunder and Sun - Grant & Wilmot Coffeehouse". A year later they reworked the piece and it is showcased here.
