ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Michael Sarian's music combines vibrant rhythms from his native Argentina with the complex language of modern jazz infused from his current New York City environment. The resulting mix compels you to listen closely while restraining (or not) the urge to dance your ass off." Alan Ferber, Grammy-nominated composer and trombonist.

Born in Canada and raised in Argentina, Michael Sarian is a trumpeter and composer whose work has been heard throughout the United States, South America and Europe. Introduced to music early on, Michael began playing the piano at the age of six, was handed his first trumpet at 13, and was touring the United Kingdom by age 18. As a young adult in Buenos Aires, he studied with many of the best musicians in Argentina, including Juan “Pollo” Raffo, Richard Nant and Juan Cruz de Urquiza. Never one to turn down a gig, Michael has performed and toured professionally with several groups: from progressive rock bands in empty basements, 12 piece disco bands playing by the beach in Uruguay, rock bands in packed sports arenas, to big bands at the Teatro Colón, and everyting in between.

Michael’s passion for developing new work drew him towards education, and by the age of 23, in addition to continuing to perform, he became a full-time music teacher at one of the top international schools in Argentina.

Relocated to New York City in 2012 to pursue a master’s degree in Jazz Studies at New York University, Sarian studied with great musicians such as Laurie Frink, Alan Ferber, Brad Shepik, Ralph Alessi and Mike Rodriguez. During his time at NYU, he was fortunate enough to have played and recorded with Joe Lovano, Alan Ferber, Lenny Pickett, Billy Drewes, Mike Richmond, and Wayne Krantz, to name a few.

Proud to finally present his debut album as a leader, Sarian explains that “Subtitles is a universal translation of the many influences and sounds heard from around the world and on the album. But really from the fact that when I was younger I used to mumble a lot, and still do today. My friends always said they needed subtitles to understand what I was saying. Now I feel like my music is my subtitle.”
