ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"The definitive Micho Russell CD…The variety displayed in the forty-nine tracks doggedly traced from many sources has done the world of traditional music a great service." — Irish Voice

“A delight…This two-CD collection, released to mark the centenary of [Russell's] birth, lives up to its name." — Irish Times, 4-Star Review

"A bounty of glorious and often surprising music...it goes beyond what many people measure music by...and into the heart's core...Rarities & Old Favorites 1949–1993 will stand for the foreseeable future as one of seminal and definitive traditional Irish recordings." — Dave Ferman blog

Selections on this 92-minute double album range from humble home recordings made on simple equipment to professional recordings made using some of the best technology available at the time. The vitality and originality of Micho Russell’s music are the unifying themes that shine throughout. Of the forty-nine tracks only five have ever been released before.

The album begins with a rare 1949 archival recording of Russell made by Séamus Ennis and the Raidió Éireann Mobile Recording Unit on an acetate disc. Other highlights include recordings of Russell playing for house dances with fellow Doolin musicians, selections from an informal 1969 recording session at the home of English folk music producer Bill Leader, and tracks of Russell recorded at folk festivals in Germany in the 1970s. Studio and live performances digitally recorded on Russell’s last trips to New York in the 1990s are woven throughout the two-disc set.

This historic recording will surely be one of the most talked-about traditional albums of the year and will be welcomed both by the Clare musician’s longtime fans as well as by those who have yet to discover the joy of Micho Russell’s music.

Note: the physical CD consists of two discs and includes a 16-page booklet. The download album has been combined into one disc. The download does not include a booklet.
