ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Mike Morey is a classical and electric guitarist, composer, and improviser whose distinctive style has developed from a unique synthesis of classical, rock, and jazz/fusion music. He has written numerous solo, and chamber works showcasing the guitar as well as music for orchestra. His exploration of composition began under the direction of Blaise Ferrandino, followed by studies in counterpoint, harmony, and orchestration. He later studied improvisation and technique from Jan Ryberg and Chris Carrington and musicianship with Robert Guthrie at Southern Methodist University. Mike holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas with a related field emphasis in musicology. Mike has been a featured performer in various music festivals throughout the country while maintaining an active composing schedule.

Paraty – notes by Mike Morey
The idea for this recording basically came from my stay on the island of Paraty, which is a preserved Portuguese colonial and Brazilian Imperial town that is situated north on the coastline of Rio de Janerio. I was so fascinated by the city's raw beauty that I decided to compose music along with taking many pictures to record my travels. Some pieces preserve the peaceful ambience of Paraty's beaches while others resemble the boisterous merry-making that takes place at night in the cobble stone streets.
Although each piece has been carefully notated, there still largely remains a strong improvisatory character throughout the music. These pieces are not intended to be exact representations of specific images and sounds that I saw and heard, but rather brief reflections or “commentaries” that evoke the soundscapes of specific places within the town. In sum, my intentions are not to give the listener everything they need to know, but rather provide to them a curiosity about this special place.
The second fusion sonata contains several disparate formal and stylistic elements such as rock, jazz-fusion, and blues. Although the piece is largely rooted in the classical sonata form, it is still meant to communicate a specific soundscape that I heard during a street music celebration. The first movement contains a similar harmonic balance to the traditional classical sonata along with following the sonata formal design of exposition, development, and recurrence, while the second movement contains impressionistic harmonic elements and follows a loose ABA form. The largely improvised third movement incorporates a swing rhythm and employs polymodal and polypentatonic languages. The fourth movement begins with a freely improvised section and then follows a loose 12 bar blues form.
The Suite for Paraty is a set of 6 character pieces that represent some of the liveliest beaches in the city. They are all based on a 7-note motivic cell that becomes transformed through polymetrics, augmentation, and extended harmonic languages. The Four Miniatures for Trindade are character pieces that use polymeter as their primary structural and stylistic element.
In the late 17th century, the Caminho do Ouro held the position of Party’s trading post as well as the outlet port of gold production from Minas Gerais to Portugal. The history inspired me to compose a short single movement piece that reflects on the profundity of its history. The Subway Kid is a large single movement work for four guitars that follows a loose sonata form design. Despite its length and density, it remains in my view the most accessible work on the album with its repetition of 3 tuneful themes and clear division of sections.
