Album Notes
Mike Rud, songwriter and veteran Canadian jazz guitarist, has been performing at clubs and festivals in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, and many other Canadian centers, since 1986. He has shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Herb Ellis, Kenny Wheeler, Chuck Israels, and Randy Brecker, to name just a few.

But in his new project, Notes on Montréal, Mike is heading out into far broader musical territory. Inspired by the literature of Montréal (Roy, Richer, Tremblay and many others), Mike has written a cycle of music and lyrics focused around that city and its mythic identity. The songs reflect sometimes on characters and scenarios from the literature, other times on broader themes, also drawn from those great books.

This music features the stunning Toronto vocalist Sienna Dahlen, a brilliant Montréal-based rhythm section, and a string quartet! Plus guitar commentaries from Mike.

Notes on Montreal
I love this album — it has the depth to get better with repeated listening. An interesting idea — songs about characters from literature set in Montreal — Mike has written insightful songs and layered the arrangements in ways that reflect the complexities of human relationships within the musical relationships. Sienna Dahlen's voice is elastic and articulate; there are a lot of words in these songs, they're important, and it's great to be able to hear them. I love the layering of the strings, piano, guitar and bass. I'm sorry we don't hear Mike sing more, but he gets in on the last track. I have a number of favorites on this Album: Florentine, The Writer; Parc La Fontaine; Bags, Clothes, Bottles keep playing in my head. Love the interesting use of the string quartet in these jazz compositions.
