Chris Nelder

An amazingly versatile musician
"Again with the Microphone" is a remarkable album reflecting the incredible range and versatility of Mike Sugar, one of the most dangerous, quintuple-threat artists on the planet. Not many musicians can compose, perform and produce an entire album alone, at least not without its sounding like a badly-engineered promo for their real talent as a guitarist, bassist, or whatever. But Sugar can and does, moving fluidly from danceable funk that would make Solomon Burke proud, to smoky-sexy torch songs, to rock-ska reminiscent of The Police, to indie pop, to slow introspective ballads that few rock artists have the courage to attempt. His prowess as an A-list bassist is certainly evident throughout, but not to the detriment of the music overall, giving appropriate weight to the guitar, keys, drums, and vocals, all of which he performs with aplomb and mixes with equanamity. On the whole, it's a fascinating collection of sounds that continues to give up new insights and tantalizing treats on repeated listenings.
