by Mike Verna

Whether drumming/singing with his live band, Stripper, or recording solo albums in the lab, this guy fancies the sounds between sweet pop and the tuneless bizarre. Anything is game for at least one record-length (if not one song).

Album Notes
Originally from New York, Verna picked up the drums at the age of eight, and has since released thirty albums of original material independently. He has played shows with the Jesus Lizard, Enon, Qui, GWAR, the Joe Morris Quartet, Six Finger Satellite, Model/Actress, Earthless, Les Savy Fav, The Dismemberment Plan and Melt-Banana. Verna currently resides in Los Angeles, edits television shows, directs independent films and drums/sings with his live band, Stripper. He is always recording. Always.

Verna has always been an advocate of lo-fi and the DIY aesthetic, and he burned the motors out of his first three 4-track recorders. Early recordings utilized traditional instruments paired with more unconventional sounds like telephones, buckets of water, bees, vacuum cleaners, political speeches, car doors and industrial sheet metal. He has also recorded several mash-up albums (under the pseudonym Ghost), where he plays alongside the a cappella raps of one artist (RZA, Jay-Z, Aceyalone, Ol' Dirty Bastard, 2Pac, Nas, 50 Cent, etc.) and the music samples of another (Throbbing Gristle, Can, Gert Wilden & Orchestra, Iron Maiden, John Zorn, Serge Gainsbourg, Steve Reich, Faust, Burt Bacharach, Henry Mancini, etc.). He is also a fan of the cover song, recording versions of tracks by Liz Phair, Brainiac, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Harry Nilsson, Captain Beefheart, Yoko Ono, XTC, Rush, Bjork, the Minutemen, the Pretenders, Fabrizio de André, Shudder to Think and Leonard Cohen, among others.
