Album Notes
“When the time had fully come, God sent his son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we
might receive the full rights of sons” This passage from Galatians has been on my mind for many years when it comes to talking about the Christmas story. The idea that at the very beginning, immediately after the fall of Adam and Eve into sin and the curse that has followed, God put into motion a promise to restore peace between God and man and that he himself would deliver us… when the time had fully come.
While I have always loved Christmas and its tradition, as I get older, it is the fullness of the story of Christmas that has become so important to me. One of my fondest musical memories is sitting down in front of the stereo listening to Handel’s Messiah, while looking at the pretty artwork and pictures of the old Christmas records. I loved Messiah’s three movements from, “Part, the first”, of the prophecies and birth of Christ, the second movement containing the scripture of the Passion and the third scene of final victory and Glory. It is after all OUR story, fallen into sin, separate from a holy God and in desperate need of rescue. Christmas, when seen in this context, is so much more than a tiny baby born to poor parents who had a hard life, who grew up to be a “good man”. Christmas is a Promise fulfilled, a Hope restored, A Savior sent and Salvation to all living in darkness. He was sent in humility for this purpose for you and for me that we might “have life to the full”.

This Christmas album was born with this heartbeat. To not just sing songs of Christmas and find new ways to sing the old standards, but a hope that we might take a walk through the bigger picture of the Christmas story. From the classical introduction that takes us through “The Fall”, to the declaration that God With US - “Emmanuel Has Come”. To the Christmas Story in Luke chapter 2, to a celebration of Heaven in “Further Up Further In”, we hope you’ll hear the Christmas story in a new way.
