ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Of the 25 or so albums I have assembled over the past 30-plus years, this is one of the finest. It begins by emerging from the mists of primordial gloom, traveling across minimalism, a re-invention of the prelude and fugue with a reggae ending, a rag, an Irish-inspired jig, and explorations of orchestral composition.

Here were my notes on the philosophy behind the recordings:

improvisation expands; composition distills

The possibilities of foreshadowing and layering of large and small time-frames are several orders of magnitude greater, in composition than in improvisation; which can be an obstacle if the tiny intricacies dominate. The sweeping flow needs to take charge.

Some aspects of the story have to remain unexplained,
or the details detract from the drama.

exploring creation:
A metaphysical point, as well as a practical artistic one. “Striving to create” emphasizes action rather than intuition. Instead: discovery of the perfect knowledge already in existence (as it must be, in an eternal sense, beyond the realm of time) places the emphasis back on hearing.

Exploring the possibilities suggested by a theme.

The carver, following the grain of the wood.
