Album Notes
Mark Miller was raised on a farm in Madison County, Iowa, where there are, oddly, no jazz clubs. He began singing professionally in San Francisco, with the Gilbert and Sullivan Troupe, the Lamplighters. Miller moved south to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, and sometime in between dinner theatre and summer stock gigs, fell in love with jazz. He studied music harmony and theory at Los Angeles City College, where he was awarded a full scholarship by drummer Dave Alpert. Performing in an Honors Concert at LACC, Miller caught the eye of the late Teri Merrill-Aarons, founder of the Los Angeles Jazz Society, who began promoting him and booking him in the better jazz venues. It was during this time that he met the legendary Page Cavanaugh, who is featured on "Dreamer With A Penny". Miller began booking, promoting, and making guest appearances with The Page Cavanaugh Trio in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. He also worked frequently with Gildo Mahones, Joyce Collins, and Jane Getz. In his first national review, JazzTimes Magazine called his work, "masterpieces of interpretation". Music Connection Magazine called him "..a superior vocalist, one of LA's finest". Miller has studied keyboards for 8 years, first with Jane Getz, then Joyce Collins. He currently books and promotes the popular Sunday Evening Jazz Series at Chaya Brasserie, in Beverly Hills, where he also appears with his own trio on a regular basis. This is his first album, released under his own label "Sliding Glass Door Productions".

Smooth and rich
I love this CD. These outstanding vocals get the superb accompaniments they deserve. Mark may have been born too late. There was a time when the market had a keener appreciation for such terrific performances. How'd I miss reviewing this earlier?

Alan Bargebuhr, Cadence Magazine (c) 2005

"Miller's clean, clear, boyish vocal enthusiasm is refreshing...."
"Its nice to have a version of (Dreamer With A) Penny to refer to other than Dino's. Mark Miller folds his earnest
tenor into the lyric so sweetly that you want to believe
the track is from some long lost original cast album. Very
pleasant. Even diverting. Miller's clean, clear, boyish
vocal enthusiasm is refreshing....(Page Cavanaugh's) playing
is bright, nimble, and swingingly spare."

Jean Pagano

Musical velvet for the soul
Mark Miller's "Dreamer with a Penny" is musical velvet for the soul. His vocals are rich and rewarding and he crafts each of the songs in this collections as only he can do. The musicians and the vocals mesh seemlessly into a flowing river of jazz covers, leaving the listener to float away on the sound. The production is first rate and the experience of hearing Mark's voice is as much a treat on this disc as it is hearing him in person

John Gilbert

This album has all the ingredients to be a winner....
This album has all the ingredients to be a winner, three trios consisting of the best of the best and a singer who sings the songs as they should be sung, with no undo histrionics. I have no hesitancey in giving this recording a 5 star rating.

Keizo Takada, Record Collector Magazine, Japan

"...most impressive..."
Mark Miller sings with a young and sweet voice in a straightforward, no frills fashion...."You Are There" is most impressive."

Kate Kaiser, Jazz Now Magazine

Miller's tone is warm and mellow and perfect for that "romantic mood."
Miller's tone is warm and mellow and perfect for that "romantic mood"....Michael Feinstein commented that Miller's "interpretations are joyful, swinging, and a pleasure to hear." I agree with this assessment...

Richard McKinney

Exceptional artistry makes this CD a gem.
Miller sings with extreme elegance making love to each lyric and pitch. Flawless accompaniment allows superb vocal tracks to soar as if standing alone. Each interpretation sculpts a masterful original out of brilliant existing material. Born too late, Miller still seems ahead of his time with a musical maturity rarely found in the vocal jazz style. Even the mix elevates the singer's tones just enough to embrace the accompaniment without sounding led by it. Bravo!
