ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
MiMi FEROCIOUS, as the name implies, is pretty but loud, progressive but poppy, sensitive but with balls.

Led by songstress Stephanie St. John, the New York-based rock troupe includes bassist David Wilson, guitarist Michael Preston and drummer David Ross.

The dramatic vocals of Freddie Mercury and the flair of PJ Harvey, the intricate song structures of Joni Mitchell and the pop sensibility of Elvis Costello, the progressive edge of Rush and the fun campiness of Blondie fuse into a cohesive, addictive and distinctive sound.

250 Times Sweeter Than Sugar is a KNOCKOUT!
250 Times Sweeter Than Sugar, the debut cd by Mimi Ferocious, is a KNOCKOUT! Clearly this is one of the most original and flavorful albums to come out this year. Womanrock Magazine

Mimi Ferocious is all Bangles and Blondie.
Mimi Ferocious embodies that genre of geek chic retro girl rock where everything 80s is new again. If campy song titles are any indication for success, the way Flaming Lips went mainstream with Vaseline and Buddy Holly was Weezer's money shot, it just might be possible that Mimi Ferocious gets lucky with their opening track, Tupperware Sky. Mimi Ferocious is all Bangles and Blondie. In tribute to Debbie Harry, the band does a fierce job at covering I Feel Love on the album. Lead guitar on Sister Barbara is hypnotic. Songwriting leans toward the figurative language of the urban artist variety, i.e. lots of talk of sleeping with cab drivers and the like.

shimmering pop ballad "Chariot"
As a preliminary taste of …Sugar, Stephanie's uncommonly pretty voice carries the shimmering pop ballad "Chariot" to new heights in her already impressive cache of accomplished songwriting. An established flare for whimsical lyrics shows up again on the breezy "Tupperwhere Sky," a reworking of the song "Soul River Tight" from Cinderella's Dead. "Tupperwhere Sky" features a distinctively New Wave influence permeating Michael's inventive guitar riffs, and Stephanie's finely integrated admiration for Blondie and Deborah Harry are in full evidence.

The CD was so good that it put ten pounds on me. Now I have to diet. That's what happens when I listen to something so sweet.

Very Pop
Hit Picks: Very Pop, extremely well produced tunes. Great bass lick on “Jonathan” and an absolutely kickin’ re-make of “I Feel Love”!

A Matchless Album
I have played this CD over a dozen times in the last 2-3 days. Each track from beginning to end holds its own in originality and individuality. Even the cover of “I Feel Love” almost feels like a musical restoration of a classic disco song. The lead singer Stephanie St. John has a singularly remarkable voice. But her songwriting is her most valuable asset and the clean production wisely allows it to breathe freely. I love stumbling upon invigorating new works, for it’s a rare event to discover music that encourages many repeat plays.

250 Times Sweeter Than Sugar goes a long way toward earning its title.
Connecticut-born Stephanie St. John’s post-goth vibrato and lilting guitar were clear even as a singer-songwriter and avant-collaborator. She brings her cover of “I Feel Love” to local prog-pop foursome Mimi Ferocious, whose 250 Times Sweeter Than Sugar goes a long way toward earning its title.

energetic alternative rock with cool riffs and memorable tunes
Stephanie St.John made her solo debut with "Cinderella's Dead". Now she's back with the superbly named band Mimi Ferocious. This record is energetic alternative rock with cool riffs and memorable tunes. Opener "Tupperwhere Sky" has a furious guitar riff from Michael Preston and a lively vocal by St.John. "Chariot" is poppy and sweet. I'm reminded of Juliana Hatfield in her early nineties phase. "Cab Driver" is a cute little song with a nice chorus. "The Best Ones" is a lovely ballad with a strong vocal. The cover of Donna Summer's "I Feel love" is unexpected and works surprisingly well. In all it's a strong debut for Mimi Ferocious, it wont make you feel like you've overdosed on sugar despite the title.
