Album Notes
BALINESE DREAM carries the listener into the live pulsating soundscape of Bali. Each composition is uniquely crafted from a fusion of Eastern and Western instruments and musical ideas and inter-wooven with the live pulsating soundscape of the fertile Island life of Bali. The gamelan orchestras of Bali, bronze and bamboo metallophones, gongs, drums and flutes are both percussive and melodic and have a scintillating shimmering quality. Expertly blended with the melodic, mellow tonalities of Indian bansuri flutes, tablas, sarods, western scalloped fretboard guitar, piano and others sounds, the totality of tonal vibration transport the listener directly into the cosmic night skies of Balinese temple ceremonies and pure intimate landscapes of love.

Mindia Devi is an award winning multi-instrumentalist and composer who lived and studied in Bali as a Fulbright Scholar and in India as a Smithsonian Fellow of the classical bansuri flute. Her love of the Balinese culture and people seep into every timeless moment of music. One moment we hear and feel the driving rhythms of Balinese gongs and metallophones (Gamelan) immersed in a reverberating chorus of monk-like chanting frogs and crickets while next we are spellbound by the sonorous tonal infinities of a bansuri flute echoing live in the Taj Mahal. Then to China where flutes, esraj, scalloped guitar and tablas evoke the vast landscape of endless rivers and sky's. Back around to the simple harmonic pleasures pouring out of a fluted love song to the divine accompanied by 12 string guitars and grand pianos.

As one of the world's only female bansuri flute players performing on the scene today she has committed herself to a life of music following the muse's spirit of creativity where ever it takes her. She is a disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and G.S.Sachdev, all masters of Indian classical music. She is also a Fulbright Scholar of Balinese Gamelan music and a jazz flutist with deep roots in the classic NYC jazz scene of her teenage years.

Balinese Dream is a period classic created during Mindia's years of living and studying in India and Bali. It resonates with a rare artistry born of total devotion and the ideals of music as a means of transcendence and evolution. YOU WILL WANT TO HEAR IT AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.

"It is rare to find East and West so harmoniously blended."

"One of the East/West melds that really work."
