Dim Sum

“Dim Sum” is Min Xiao-Fen's first new release in six years - thanks to a generous grant from the Peter S. Reed Foundation. The acclaimed Chinese pipa soloist/vocalist/composer and downtown percussionist Satoshi Takeishi present a full-length version of the Min’s latest work – premiered December 15, 2012 at John Zorn’s The Stone in New York City. Inspired by everyday sounds that she heard growing up as a child in Nanjing, Min describes “Dim Sum” as “six musical dishes meant to touch the heart.” The disc also features four new solo compositions: “Like a Flower,” “Blue Pipa,” “Tan Tan, Chang Chang” and “ABC” (American Born Chinese). In addition to pipa, Min performs on finger piano, sanxian, Nanying pipa, toy pipa and electronics.

An unique voice with great vision, this CD has it all!
With my comprehensive collection of pipa CDs by Min Xiao-Fen - Moon Rising, Spring River Flower Moon Night, Min Xiao-Fen with Six Composers and Viper, the musical statement of "Dim Sum" is by far her most personal.
Her exquisite vocal line accentuates not only her creativity as a songwriter, but also her intrigue vocal quality that has profound feelings and expressiveness.
I love the sound of the different plucked instruments that Min used - the electric pipa, the child's pipa, the 3 string sanxian and the ancient Nanyin pipa. Not only they demonstrate the rich tradition of the Chinese lute, but her compositions shine a light of the creative possibilities of pipa music.
If you have never heard of Min Xiao-Fen's music, then do yourself a favor and buy "Dim Sum!"
