Album Notes
Twelve tracks, twelve cultures, twelve unique journeys.

"Collage" is a musical kaleidoscope performed 'live in the studio' by Mixed Beans multicultural choir, an inclusive community choir conducted by professional choir-director Cath Mundy and now in their fifth year of singing together.

As one choir member so aptly observed, "As I sing with Mixed Beans, I travel. I inhabit the place of the song's origin for a moment in time. When I do this, I feel as one with humanity."

This album truly celebrates unity in diversity through community singing.

Enjoy the journey!

Mixed Beans multicultural choir is an inclusive group that meets at Beenleigh Library, Queensland, Australia, for weekly singing sessions under the guidance of professional singer-musician-choir director Cath Mundy.

People of all ages, abilities and cultures are welcome to attend - every session is open to members of the public to join, no audition or fees required. Founded by Beenleigh LIbrary in July 2009, the choir is proudly supported by Beenleigh Library (Logan City Council libraries) and its parent body Singclusion Inc.

Mixed Beans & Singclusion Inc rely on their own fundraising efforts to continue to provide this unique service.

"Collage" is Mixed Beans' first album. It is built on the richness that the choir members (past & present) have shared from their many varied cultural origins and backgrounds, promoting profound and joyful harmony and understanding.

The choir's focus is the coming together of many voices. "Collage" features unaccompanied (acappella) songs including uptempo rounds and four-part harmonies, sometimes rhythmically supported by darambuka and shakers, plus a number of tracks where the voices are tastefully supported by a small ensemble of mainly acoustic instruments.

Beenleigh is in a region of Australia that boasts its most multicultural population - over 180 distinct cultural groups have been identified as living in the Logan region of South-East Queensland.

To reflect this, "Collage" visits many places; geographical, musical and emotional. We are invited to experience the stirring Zulu hymns of South Africa, the vibrant calls of street vendors in a busy Indonesian marketplace, the delight of children playing games in Vanuatu's villages, the deep sorrow of the 'Sevda-linke' of Croatia, the rousing call of the freedom songs of Deep South African-America, the upbeat fun of a Malaysian love story, and a heartfelt vision for peace in Israel and beyond.

Through an inclusive process of engagement, whereby choir members have had a voice in song selection, arrangement, cover design and album title, "Collage" showcases what can be achieved when we play together with open minds and hearts.

Thank YOU! In buying this album, you are supporting the continuance of Mixed Beans, which relies entirely on its own fundraising to keep running open-to-the-public weekly singing sessions at Beenleigh Library.
