GOOD CHARACTER!

These delightful songs have been sung with gusto by hundreds of children in grades K-5. In addition to singing them, the students have learned what the words mean and how to develop these positive attributes.

They were composed (words and music) by Marcia Lantz Jordan, a retired (re-treaded) Public School Music Teacher. Marcia has written many songs for her students through the years because she recognizes the fact that we can all remember things better when we sing them. She has long been troubled by the fact that for decades educators have not had a specific standard of good character with which they can guide their students.

The North Carolina State Department of Education recently mandated that GOOD CHARACTER TRAITS be taught in all North Carolina public schools. Marcia was challenged by her best friend, a counselor in an elementary school (Sawmills Accelerated School), to write a song for each of the nine character traits adopted by Caldwell County, where her school is located.

In the 2000-2001 school year Marcia composed the songs and the students sang them. They went home and taught the songs to their younger brothers and sisters. In fact, the director of a local day-care center called the school to find out more about the "wonderful songs the kids are singing." In 2002, a CD and/or cassette have been released which feature the singing of twenty-two 4th and 5th grade Sawmills students plus Marcia's granddaughters.

One day, a group of middle school students presented a patriotic skit at a program which also featured one of the character songs sung by the whole student body of Sawmills. The middle school teacher called back to say that her students sang the character song on the bus all the way back to their school.

Parents and grandparents say they enjoy listening and singing along.

In other words, the songs, which are all upbeat and feature a wonderful accompaniment with a variety of instruments, seem to appeal to all ages. Actually, each song is featured twice: once with children singing and once with just the instrumental. That makes it user friendly for teachers who want to present a program to parents (note: there is also a song called "Character" which can be used as an introduction and as a finale). Students have purchased the CD or tape for themselves and use the accompaniment tape to sing Karaoke-style.

Marcia has published an accompanying book for educators which is also entitled Celebrating Good Character and includes:

· A 'lead sheet' for each of the songs.
· A monthly curriculum guide featuring a social studies focus for each month and a variety of suggested reading and writing activities which reinforce the character trait as well as the social studies emphasis. One of the writing activities each month has the students write a paragraph about someone they know who exhibits that month's character trait. After the teacher reads/grades it, they are to take it to the person about whom they wrote. Thus, they are learning to look for these traits in others and they are learning the importance of affirming others.
· A list of suggested books to be read about people who exhibit the trait.
· Several additional recommended songs (also composed by Marcia), which enhance the social studies emphasis (these are not on the CD or tape).
· A suggested skit which can be used with all or some of the songs and has an adaptation for private / church/ or home schools.

The special price for a package deal, which can be purchased directly from Marcia and includes the CD, cassette and book is $30.00 plus $5.00 for regular shipping and handling.

By the way, the children on the cover are her beloved grandchildren and that's Marcia in the middle.

Great character builders... you will find yourself humming these songs!
I continue to be impressed when I hear our school's students sing these songs and apply the messages to their lives. The songs are fun but most importantly build the good character traits we want in our children!

Younger children love these songs too!
My 10 year old daughter has this CD and plays it at home all of the time. My 5 year old knows most of the words to the songs and loves them. His favorite is "Courage". I find myself singing them as well. Thank you Mrs. Jordan, for giving us this tool to further instill character to our children.

The unique key to our school's emphasis on Character Education is a set of songs
Character Education and encouraging postive character traits is a yearlong, whole-school emphasis at Sawmills Accelerated School. The unique key to our emphasis is the set of songs, "Celebrating Good Character." Our students learn these songs in music class and later perform the songs at assemblies, community events and in the classroom. All of our classroom teachers have their own CD,and integrate the songs and character education into classroom activities. Our goal is that our students will apply the messages of these songs into their everyday lives ... at home and at school!

These songs have enhanced total curriculum and reduced discipline referrals
It's overwhelming to see the excitement of our students (K-5) as they learn the meaning of positive character traits, sing them with gusto, enjoy the upbeat music and then teach them to their pre-school siblings (even parents and grandparents have reported that they enjoy hearing and singing the songs).
Teachers in all of our classrooms enjoy the easy-to-use curriculum guide which integrates positive character traits across the curriculum areas. The staff and administrators refer back to the message of the songs when discipline matters arise. We have see discipline referrals decrease and positive behaviors increase. We have continued to see positive effects in academics as students, staff and community celebrate together the growth of good character which is exemplified at home, school and community.
