ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
(This is one of my better recordings and I don't even remember writing half these songs. One number seemed to follow the other, sometimes I had 2 or 3 songs going at the same time. Dan engineered and he came up with a hard, loud sound that was ideal for the type of material I was writing. I don't really consider myself a "Folk" singer. My songs make much more sense to me if they're viewed as Rock'n'Roll songs done on acoustic guitar, without other accompaniment. "Folk" sometimes implies that soft, idyllic sensibility that marred a lot of Dylan's early work. I like a more fundamental, countrified approach - just talkin' 'bout livin' day to day wid da crackheads, pimps, parasites, losers, debutantes, TB merchants, worthless musicians, aw heck, just your average American sailorboy lookin' for a good time. Most of the songs run about 3 to less than 4 minutes in length and generally they're uptempo, though the mood may be seen as somewhere south of there. As a reward for being one of my best CD's, "Girl On Girl" received almost no airplay and the absolute minimum of press coverage.I recorded this in about 8 hours and mixed it in 3 - it is unquestionably the best CD of 1999.)

Maurice Mattei started writing songs in his early teen years. After the release of his first recordings in 1983 and 1988 he abandoned music to pursue photography. His interest lay primarily in documentary photography and this led him into certain social circles (Bikers, Drug Addicts, Debutantes, Wrestlers, Strippers, Socialites, Celebrities, etc.) that he found to be strangely new and oddly exciting. This vast and glorious parade of life re-ignited his desire to write songs. In 1995 he released his first CD of original material. He has since released 7 CD's, the latest being a live recording entitled "Maurice Mattei And A Room Full Of Victims". In addition to CD's, Mr. Mattei has released three cassette tapes, two 7-inch singles, one tape-cassette single and one CD single since 1995. To see a complete discography, examples of photographic works, lyrics page, additional mp3's, and miscellaneous writings please go to the Maurice Mattei web site - www.mmattei.com.

Influences include Robert Johnson (Blues Singer), William Burroughs (Writer), Billie Holiday (Jazz Singer), Chuck Berry (Singer/Songwriter), Robert Frank (Photographer), Keith Richard (Singer/Songwriter), Donatien-Alphonse-Francois de Sade (Writer), The Beatles (Rock Band), Leonardo Da Vinci (Artist/Inventor), Elvis Presley (Singer), Marcus Aurelius (Writer/Emperor) and Buffy Davis (Actress).

Mr. Mattei has performed steadily since his 1995 release. He performs solo and prefers to be an opening act since this allows him to get home at a reasonable hour. The following is a list of a few of the Artists, most of which few people have ever heard of, that Mr. Mattei has performed with: The Cole Brothers, The Brand, Radiolaria, Victoria Williams, David Wolfenberger, Over The Rhine, Mercy Baby, Ric Hickey and The Loose Wrecks, Roger Mcguinn, Love America and Johnny Graves.

Don Mcleese - No Depression Magazine

the highest songwriting standards, an ear-opening revelation.
You can hold the best of Maurice Mattei's Material to the highest songwriting standards. His "Set The World On fire" would not only fit fine on Bob Dylan's Love And Theft album, It would be a highlight. It was an ear-opening revelation when a career spanning package from this unsung songwriter arrived in the mail.

Possess a rich storytelling quality reminiscent of Hank Williams Sr. and Dylan
His songs, reminiscent of Hank Williams Sr. and Bob Dylan, and others possess a rich storytelling quality and act as windows through which to view the more uncommon, even perverse aspects of society. And there may be no other local storyteller as prolific as Mattei.
