ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Moira Nelson
Harp, Voice, Piano, Classical Guitar, Composition

Born in London, England, Moira moved to Toronto as a child and began her musical education with piano lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music and privately with Mona Bates. By the age of twelve she had passed her Grade 10 piano examination and was performing her own compositions at concerts and recitals. Her studies broadened to include harmony, composition, voice and classical guitar.

Still in high school, Moira made her professional debut as a pianist with a jazz quartet. A chance encounter during a vacation in England led to extensive appearances in and around London where she worked as a soloist, playing guitar and singing Celtic and traditional music along with her own original songs.

Some years ago, Moira began playing the harp, an instrument she had always dreamed of mastering. She is now president of the Toronto Chapter of the ISFHC (International Society of Folk Harpers and Craftsmen) and plays a 36-string "Enchantress" harp, which was custom designed and built for her.

An accomplished and versatile artist, Moira's busy schedule includes concert and studio work in addition to private and corporate functions. At this time, she is working on a number of recording projects and has just completed her second CD, "After the Fall", with Elena Jubinville, Kathryn Moses and Rick Shadrach Lazar. Moonfyre, an original harp solo was selected to appear on a compilation CD recently released in Italy by "Keltica". Moira's first album, "Time Calls My Name", features many of her own compositions and has received excellent reviews. Selections from both albums have received international airplay.

Reviews:

"Nelson uses her versatile voice to present a variety of musical styles ranging from Jazz and folk to traditional ballads. She accompanies herself on all instruments which includes fine work on guitar and piano. Pleasing and easy to listen to, her music shows potential for greater artistic achievement."

~Steve Pecar, "The Mississauga News"

The more I listened, the more I was drawn into how well wrought the instrumentals unfolded. These musicians truly know how to craft a cohesive song. Moira's skills are equally poignant in her lyrics. Nelson's vocals were expressive and mutable, very well matched with melodic journeys throughout her pieces.

~Jennifer Pratt-Walter, "Folk Harp Journal"

"That's absolutely lovely."
-Rick Fielding, host of CIUT's Acoustic Workshop.

"Very beautiful."
-Ann Rohmer, CITY-TV

"Just lovely. You have such a sweet voice."
-Bob McAdorey, Global Television

"An experience they (the audience) will not soon forget."
-Vince Versace, Etobicoke Life

"Fine work."
-Steve Pecar, The Mississauga News

"Enchanting musical stylings."
-Mary Lyle, Etobicoke Life

"An awesome talent on harp, voice and classical guitar."
-Boyd F. Williams, Black Noise Studio

"This was a most impressive concert with many beautiful original compositions and great performances from all those involved. Once again I felt drawn by the music into another time and place."
-Lisa Giordano from a review of Moira Nelson in concert published in "Harp Notes Ontario"

Time Calls My Name (1995)
Moira Nelson is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalsist from Toronto, Time Calls My Name being her first release. This collection of mostly original material is impressively crafted on, most notably, acoustic guitar, piano and cello by Moira who plays all instruments on this CD. The music is English Traditional and Blues influenced but the main character of the songs arise from Moira’s vocal stylings, which strike me as avant-garde. She employs a unique technique, where she seemingly reaches outside the range of her voice, to pleasant effect. As the title suggests, time is one of the themes explored in Moira’s songs as well as the universal musings of regret, broken dreams, disillusionment and the longing for love, yet the overall feeling is positive as these themes are all nicely pared with hopeful melodies.
